Skid row is cleaning up. San Fran based retail giant Upper Playground along with Estevan Oriol (photographer/director) and Mister Cartoon (artist) will be injecting Los Angeles’s seedy downtown area with four “one of a kind retail establishments”. They’ll be apparel pieces galore as well as the finest of fine art – urban style of course. Next Saturday the 31st, they’ll all get together to have a big grand opening partee. Many top notch artists will be in attendance. Some of the artists on display will be Usugrow, Sam Flores, Jeremy Fish, David Choe, Herbert Baglione, San, Retna, Saber, Alex Pardee, Ron English, Doze Green, Slick, Armsrock and David Ellis.
The four entities consist of: Upper Playground & the Last Laugh (at 125 E. 6th Street), Mister Cartoon will have his goods as well as a workstation for tattoos, Estevan Oriol will feature his Upper Playground designs as well as prints of his photography, and the “Bonus Space” will have a “rotating” rooster of fashion and art for limited time.

It’ll be interesting to see how this works out. Yes, it’s in Skid Row, but logistically this is probably a good location. It’s not too far from Staples Center/Nokia Theatre, and Walt Disney Concert Hall is also a few minutes away. You can shop here and take a short drive and get some sushi in Little Tokyo.
The big question is whether LA residents will make the trip to downtown LA. It’s trendy like Silverlake.

I meant to say, it’s *not* trendy like Silverlake.
