Giant Robot is presenting a new group show with a titular typo. But based upon the tagline, “The Art of Imbeciles,” perhaps it’s intentional? The show features the work of Ryohei Tanaka, Ako Castuera, Sean Boyles, Joe To, and Rob Sato.

Ryohei Tanaka’s versatile style has been seen everywhere from art galleries to store signage. Influenced by comics, graffiti, and fine art, he is able to dominate a variety of mediums, from drawings and paintings to paper-cuts and prints. Ako Castuera depicts a hyper-colored, gravitiy-defying world that is somewhat terrifying but also super fun. When she is not making her own art, she is a character artist for the Metacopalypse animated TV series. Applying his loose style to drawings, paintings, and even photos and videos, Sean Boyles has the ability to make carefully composed depictions of the street appear effortless. The aesthetic is not one of hardness or posing but life fully lived. The illustrations of Joe To are full of energy, with rich and colorful figures popping out of stark white backround. The gallery setting will allow for depth that could not be conveyed by the art zines he has been associated with. Paintings and illustrations by Rob Sato have been known to mix animals and humans in strange yet appealing ways. In addition to participating in numerous group and solo art shows since 2001, he received the prestigious Xeric Grant awarded to up-and-coming comic-book artists in 2004, allowing him to publish Burying Sandwiches.

A reception for the artists will be held Saturday, August 16th from 6:30-10:00PM at GRSF.

If you want something a bit less press-releasey, David Choe just blogged it in his words:

we lived together, we rode together, we fucked shit up together, we went to jail together, we burned shit down together, and we ate alot alot of pasta with butter and salt together, this is my old crew from many years ago, when i lived in oakland, there was 9 of us living above Art’s crab shack, and when i say it was the best of times and it was the worst of times, one week we’d rob every grocery store in town and make gourmet dinners and have robotech marathons, and ride all night and swim in hotel pools we werent staying at, and then play football in the rain, and then go home and finish watching robotech while all drawing on the same piece of paper, and then the next week we’d be running down the street holding a giant costco frozen ham, being chased by fratboys, but mostly it was the best of times.. If you are in the bay this Saturday and you want to see the best shit ever, and also get some art that’s affordable, don’t miss this shit, it’ll rock your shit, and my main man Joe To will be putting out his first print with my brother (it’ll be under a hundred bucks!) go check it out ,you wont be sorry.
