Now over a decade since the beginning of the designer toy movement, Kubricks, Qees and Dunnys seem like distant cousins from the toys that sparked the scene. They have become a category all their own: they are blind box toys. Blind box toys are sold with their contents enshrouded in secrecy. The risk-factor of buying the unknown is mitigated by the potential reward of getting something rare. You don’t know what you’re going to get, and that is, ostensibly, all packaged into the fun of the experience. Depending who you ask, blind boxing is a “marketing strategy” or a “fun experience.” Depending who you are, it is either one or possibly both. The segments of this story include: toy companies, toy fans, toy stores, toy artists and toy bloggers. Let’s begin at the beginning, with the toy companies. Part 1: Toy Companies.

Lots of people have been asking for release information about the upcoming Domo Qees by Toy2R and Dark Horse. We first spied this fun series of 2.5-inch figures at Toy Fair. We knew then that the Qees were going to be blind-boxed with additional pieces to be used for assembling bonus figures. We know now [...]

The most frustrating aspect of Toy Fair is that whole pesky ‘look, but can’t buy’ thing. There are palettes full of freshly delivered awesome at every turn, and almost none of it can come home with you. No, nearly everything that you come across is at least six months away from being a produced reality [...]

The photos above are Bossy Bears from basically an “18 month sneak preview” of what’s to come following the second Bossy Bear book which hits stores March 3rd. To say I have been waiting to tell you about this is an understatement. There were times I thought I might blurt it out, but finally I’ve been given the green light to do so. Anatomy artist and custoMONDAY alumni Jason Freeny has illustrated the innards of a Dunny and a Lego, and he’s now [...]

A couple months ago, Toy2R asked us to send in a ToyCyte sticker for their Sticker Qee project. I'm stoked to have our blog on the same platform as some of my favorite artists. ToyCyte's sticker gently overlaps Jason Freeny's and is kitty-korner to Jon Burgerman's sticker, which occupies the coccyx. We're also sharing space with Artdenka, Nada*One, Triclops, MAD, Betso, DOINK, Jesse Hernandez, Delicious Drips, MCA, David Horvath, Voltaire, Jaime Hayon, Slobot and many more.

Back in August, we were looking out for MCA’s first book, Simian Nation and, following it’s release in Hong Kong, it’s now reaching wider audiences. It’s as if my girlfriend and best friend conspired with Toy2R to lure me onto FaceBook with the only possible application that could circumvent my disdain for social networking. TOY2R collaborates with overseas singing sensation Jay Chou. With the release of his ninth album, Capricorn, in October of this year, the theme of magic and fantasy open the doors for these cool 2.5″ Qees. As a rabid Futurama collector (and subsequently, hopeful speculator about the fate of the series), I’m kinda excited about the combination of all things ‘outer space’ and ‘Matt Groening’, so I’m already sold on the 3″ superdeformed-ish, Qee-styled versions of Fry and Bender that Toy2R will be releasing somewhere between January and February, for roughly [...]
