Now over a decade since the beginning of the designer toy movement, Kubricks, Qees and Dunnys seem like distant cousins from the toys that sparked the scene. They have become a category all their own: they are blind box toys. Blind box toys are sold with their contents enshrouded in secrecy. The risk-factor of buying the unknown is mitigated by the potential reward of getting something rare. You don’t know what you’re going to get, and that is, ostensibly, all packaged into the fun of the experience. Depending who you ask, blind boxing is a “marketing strategy” or a “fun experience.” Depending who you are, it is either one or possibly both. The segments of this story include: toy companies, toy fans, toy stores, toy artists and toy bloggers. Let’s begin at the beginning, with the toy companies. Part 1: Toy Companies.

MyPlasticHeart continues to bring the goods to NYCC with these completely (in)organic colorways of Julie West’s Bumble & Tweet 6″ figures. Each is decked out in removable beehive bonnets, which include removable magnetic bees (and I loves me some bees). MPH plans on bringing only 18 of each figure to debut at NYCC. Expect to [...]

Here’s just a sampling of some of the exclusives from the VTN Winter 08 show. (Click here for a tidy tagged version of all the coverage.) People who had been waiting in line for hours got right to business locating these particular figures. It seemed to me like much of the crowd got in, got [...]

STRANGEco has the nicest staff on earth, seriously. Bambi probably had to let a bunch of people down easy that James Jarvis’ Martin X SE figure sold out on Black Friday and didn’t make it to VTN as part of the previously announced exclusives. However, the absence of one figure inevitably enabled the purchasing of [...]

STRANGEco is bringing a bundle of exclusives to this weekend’s Vinyl Toy Network. James Jarvis’ Martin X sold out at STRANGEco and Amos Toys online this past weekend, so VTN remains the final destination for acquiring the Bounty Hunter tribute. There will also be a GID Lorbo by Jim Woodring, the tree edition of Julie [...]

The Miami art team of Sam Borkson and Arturo Sandoval III, that otherwise goes by the name FriendsWithYou, have mashed it up yet again with STRANGEco. You may be familiar with the FriendsWithYou toys that STRANGEco has produced in the past, such as the TTTs, Wish Come True series and Malfi. This time the results of [...]

I’d heard a rumor that the much-blogged STRANGEco x James Jarvis Mini King Ken figures were already in Urban Outfitters stores, so I went to check it out. Rumor confirmed. The 4-inch apes are plentiful at your local beacon of bandwagon cool, though I do not think they are for sale online. As is usually [...]

We’ve been following these little guys since July, and the drop date is finally at hand. Although they won’t see worldwide distribution until later this month, LA-area Jarvis fans have a shot at them first [...]

Already it’s time for the exhibition to take up shop on the west coast, at Gallery 1988 in Los Angeles. The show opens tonight with a reception from 7-10PM. To further sweeten [...]

So you’re obsessed with toys. And you have to go to a birthday party for your nephew, friend’s rugrat, or just one of your preschool aged pals. For those under the age of, like four, a kaiju figure might scare the bejesus out of them, you might offend the parents with a smokin’ labbit, you [...]

tokidoki fever ravished the San Diego Comic Con, and it was h-o-t. Not only was the tokidoki booth one of the more crowded and popular spots in the toy ghetto, (I dreaded having to fight myself through the masses on this aisle) but the tokidoki releases at StrangeCo, Kidrobot and ToyTokyo also dispersed the Simone [...]

Sometimes bigger really is better. Spied at the San Diego Comic Con in the stunningly cool Strangeco booth was the epically large Smokestack by Mars1 statue, which clocks in at about three feet. The thing is way too big to be called a toy or a figure, this large piece is an idol to be [...]

First I should let you know that I actually don’t care much for humanity. I prefer to be surrounded by legions of plastic and vinyl then people. So I enter the whole Comic Con experience with a mixture of anticipation (for the toys) and dread (for the humans). But as we know, not all homo [...]
