Depending on how you’re experiencing the current recession, this is either very good news or very bad news: Kidrobot is doing an epic reissue of Huck Gee’s Series 1 Skullhead Dunny, and they’ve upped the ante. Not only will the rare, iconic Dunny be reissued, but it’s been blown up to 20 inches in size, [...]

I admit that I wasn’t so enthused about Kidrobot’s latest Dunny Endangered Series, but check out this devilish little Ledbetter. There seems to be nothing endangered about evil, but I’d pick up this guy in an open box for sure. It is my duty to tell you that the series is on sale now at [...]

Now, who wouldn’t be all over a $1500 shopping spree at KidRobot? Who would be willing to hand a minifigure to someone in the back of a cop car and snap a photo of it? Therein lies the divide between me and that person who’ll win the KidRobot Rollin’ Stock Photo Scavenger Hunt, ‘cause I’m [...]

When last we posted about Junko Mizuno, she was off making condoms and lotions for Mizuno Garden. Well, just because she’s advocating safer sex doesn’t mean she doesn’t love kids. Manga maven Junko Mizuno brings 14 demented characters from her hit graphic novel, Pure Trance, to vinyl June 4. Blind-boxed and 3-inches tall, each figure in [...]

How often have you looked at a toy and wanted to say, “that is so gay,” but been weary about appearing insensitive? Surely, tons of times. Well, now thanks to Frank Kozik and Kidrobot, you can. They beat me to the obvious pun by announcing that the Pride Labbit pack “comes out” June 4th. KR’s [...]

Frank Kozik will be stopping by San Francisco’s Kidrobot to sign his 1984 Labbit and countless other creations tonight between 6-8PM. Hard to believe it’s been almost 5 years since I last attended a Kozik signing at KRSF. If you look closely at these 2004 signing pictures, you’ll see me in line for a few [...]

It’s another beautiful day in the Bay, but it’s raining at Kidrobot.com. So while I can’t trot down to the KR store on Haight and get one today, I did just order one of Jon Burgerman’s Rainy Day Dunnys online. Yes, I bought a Dunny. Sue me. I’m a serious Burgerfan. My hands are tied. [...]

Hmmm….to borrow words off PerezHilton…”how do I say this delicately?” OK I’ll just borrow some more words off DannyDesign’s post on the Kidrobot thread: “So, do you have to buy the HappyMeal to get one? Or are you able to just purchase the Dunny?” That kind of sums up how I feel. Kidrobot is going [...]

I’m not sure if this is terrific, pathetic, hilarious or all of the above. Back in June, I was having a slow day and wrote about dop kits and diaper bags aka Kidrobot x Schifter + Partners Allover Print Bag & Accessories Collection. The gear has SRPs of $25-$475 and the press release stated: they [...]

[youtube:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mtjaj3P6Jx8&feature=player_embedded] WOW. Rosie O’Donnell is making the circuit with Munnys. She’s now gone from late night with Craig Ferguson to day time. She recently turned up on none other than The Martha Stewart Show where she picked up a couple glittered and yarn-wrapped from Martha and implored her to “Sign the bottom, you wench!” This might [...]

OK, hang onto your seats, literally. I just stumbled upon the next incarnation of “The Greatest Do It Yourself Toy.” The Seated Munny photo above was accidentally leaked with some other images. I recognized the cutting mat and immediately contacted Huck Gee. At first, he denied any knowledge of the Seated Munny. But after some [...]

Another one bites the dust…First there was Cabin Fever in January and now there is Liquidation. I guess the end of Wheaty Wheat wasn’t shocking. The angst of artists and retailers unfolded on Twitter all morning. I called up Sket-One to talk about it. Sket confirmed the closure of the 8-year old company saying he [...]

During yesterday’s segment, we profiled designer toy companies for our report on blind boxes. Today, it's all about the end users of blind boxes: the fans. Toy fans echo the diversity of the toys. We enjoy different aesthetics and buying styles. Some people care about edition size; some don't. Some fans like vinyl; some prefer resin. But all of us are a little crazy. We're in an economic recession, and we're buying toys. Let's look at what toy fans want and the possible ways of getting it.

Now over a decade since the beginning of the designer toy movement, Kubricks, Qees and Dunnys seem like distant cousins from the toys that sparked the scene. They have become a category all their own: they are blind box toys. Blind box toys are sold with their contents enshrouded in secrecy. The risk-factor of buying the unknown is mitigated by the potential reward of getting something rare. You don’t know what you’re going to get, and that is, ostensibly, all packaged into the fun of the experience. Depending who you ask, blind boxing is a “marketing strategy” or a “fun experience.” Depending who you are, it is either one or possibly both. The segments of this story include: toy companies, toy fans, toy stores, toy artists and toy bloggers. Let’s begin at the beginning, with the toy companies. Part 1: Toy Companies.

SKWAK is back! Technically, he never went away. He's actually been pretty busy, and his current schedule includes new toys, new tees and a show. Johan of the French art blog Some Cool Stuff recently interviewed SKWAK. If you can read French, bookmark his site and read the entire interview here. Alas, I cannot read French. Luckily my mom is fluent and was happy to translate. Johan asked SKWAK excellent and thoughtful questions about his art, style, mind and world. SKWAK reports back onan 8-inch Dunny with Kidrobot (!), an upcoming mini-figures series with MINDstyle (!!), an American animation project (!!!) and maybe even some porn (???). So with props to Johan and my mom (who is now a SKWAK fan and too-kindly likened my habit of cramming pages with words to Skwak's style of "too much"), here's the latest news from the Maniac World.

We blogged about this 1984 Labbit by Frank Kozik back in January. That’s early for its official April 23 release, late for the actual 80s and right on time for the eighties revival. The 1o-inch Labbit is part of an edition of 1000 and will sell for $50 each.

Kidrobot has just announced a new mini-figure series. Pastel punk illustrator Tara McPherson’s Gamma Mutant Space Friends land on earth April 23rd. The series includes 10 figures and 2 chases and will be blind–boxed for $7.95 each. As far as I know, Kidrobot continues to do its case layouts in such a way that you [...]

There’s been a lot of news about Kidrobot on TV lately, much of it coming out of the mouth of Rosie O’Donnell. The other major bit was about Kidrobot rebranding the Cartoon Network. The final sentence of the rebrand press release states: “The resulting world [of the rebrand] is a playground of rich colors and [...]

Out with the old. In with the new. Cartoon Network has now been rebranded Kidrobot style: Cartoon Network’s brand identity is inseparable from the identities of the countless interesting and lovable characters which inhabit the CN airwaves. The characters themselves are the brand and their collective power makes Cartoon Network what it is. With this redesign [...]

I guess it’s Teaser Thursday because Marka27 sent me this sneak peek of a new BIC Plastics project. “BICS”…hmmm. Could the shadowy silhouettes represent the creators of some of 2008’s hottest toys? If so, that would be cool, though I think many toy designers prefer to live outside the mold. Nonetheless, Toy2R’s Qee Creator’s series [...]

My jealousy of New Yorkers just builds and builds right now with newly announced Jon Burgerman events in the Big Apple. Spotted this on Clutter: The bandit above is David Moore from Southport. He was recently found guilty of cashing company checks (to the tune of £780,000) and using the money to buy boxes of “collectible toys known as Kidrobot or Dunnys.” When police raided his house, “they found numerous boxes of the small figurines stacked [...]
