Gallery1988’s spectacular tribute to the small screen, Idiot Box opened yesterday, and the art is resplendent with Snorks, Smurfs, Fraggles and much, much more. So great to see some of my favorite artists take on some of my favorite TV shows. There’s way too much to say, so click over to Idiot Box and check [...]

Here it is…dripping with translucent bloody carnage: Le Merde’s entry into Gallery1988’s Idiot Box. The 12-inch Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle is a mix of resin and paint and it’ll set you back $450. To purchase, please call the gallery at (323) 937-7088.

[youtube:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z4VHei6qGeQ] If there was ever any doubt that Gallery1988 is the art gallery for our generation, this is really all you need to know. For their 5th anniversary, they are throwing a tribute show to the small screen, and Saved by the Bell’s Mr. Belding is presiding. On April 2nd, the walls of the LA gallery [...]

We love Doktor A and Gallery1988, so the only sad thing about their pairing up as part of the Transcenders group show is that it’s showing in the LA Gallery, not the SF Gallery, where we could peep it with our own eyes. Luckily, G1988 always blogs up their shows for all to see. Following [...]

Following this month’s Some Kind of Wonderful art show, one of our favorite local art galleries presents another all-female lineup with an ambiguous potential movie/TV reference title. “Sweet Surrender” will run from March 6th through the 28th at Gallery1988 San Francisco and feature new work from Camilla d’Errico, Mia, Allison Torneros, Jen Tong, and Krista [...]

Gallery1988 has harnessed and curated an edgy estrogen-fest in San Francisco, but then of course, someone's gotta go and screw it up with a Valentine's Day bomb threat. Some King of Wonderful opened Friday, February 6th, and Katie was kind enough to let ToyCyte in for a full photo session prior to any potential terrorism. The show features a talented roster of some familiar names from previous G1988 shows and Hi-Fructose, as well as a few new artists--some of you may want to put on your list of ones to watch. Read on for: Allison Sommers, Cherri Wood, Kendra Binney, Mari Inukai, Nanami Cowdroy, Rachel J. Wong, Rebecca Artemisa Urias and Sarah Joncas.

Gallery1988 just posted up images of all of Brandt Peters work from yesterday’s opening of The Cackle Factory. I wish I could have been there to see these in person, but Jensen and Katie always do a great job of representing the gallery’s art for the masses. Brandt’s solo show included large oils on canvas [...]

Un-effing believable. Perhaps you saw my happy post about Gallery1988’s Under The Influence Beastie Boys tribute show yesterday? Then I noticed this amazing piece by Mark Brown on the G1988 blog. “Egg Man’s Journey” is Mark’s 16×20 acrylic on masonite contribution (sold for $1K) to the show. I’m totally stealing this info from gallery co-owner [...]

Groups shows are great because invariably you go to see the work of a particular artist you like (Doktor A, Alex Pardee, MCA, Dan Goodsell, Blinky) and you come away with a list of new artists to check out. This particular incarnation of Gallery1988’s Under the Influence is great, because, well, it’s the Beastie Boys. [...]

Amanda Visell had one of the handful of sculptural pieces, which was in the company of a pair of swans by Scott Radke and a complex game of cat and mouse by Daniel Elson. Luke Chueh, Joe Ledbetter, Anthony Ausgang, Peek-a-boo and Thomas Han brought the familiar names and the big colors. Peter Gronquist and Alex Pardee upped the creepy ante...

Gallery1988 has announced the second installment of the Under the Influence art series: a tribute to the Beastie Boys. Following last year’s tribute to comic book legend Stan Lee, and receiving the Beastie Boys’ blessing and involvement, this is guaranteed to be a super disco breakin’ show. Featuring 100 artists, this show will reinterpret the music, lyrics, style and [...]

They say that Jessica Simpson might be bad for Tony Romo’s game, but is she good for selling art? Survey says: yes! I viewed the announcements for Gallery1988’s Pete Wentz/Travis McCoy show with the typical snarkiness and skepticism one reserves for things like this (and the musical oeuvre of Billy Bob Thornton), but gallery co-owner [...]

Gallery1988 just announced its upcoming exhibition, a tradition at the venue: “The Vivisect Playset (Round 5).” For five years now, Luke Chueh and Gallery 1988 curated and hosted The Vivisect Playset, an art show featuring artists who regularly employed animal characters in their work to illustrate the human condition. The show has illuminated the talents [...]
