Long, long ago, in the days before iPhones and Kindles, there were books. Those of us who read them were influenced and inspired. Some of us went on to become writers. Others, artists. On Friday, May 1st, Gallery1988 in San Francisco opens, Beyond the Page, a group show in tribute to these classic children’s books [...]

Gallery1988 San Francisco follows its monstrously fun Monster Art Rally with another group show: Imaginary Friends, starring Andrew Bell, Cherri Wood, Israel Sanchez, Ken Garduno, Scott Campbell and Yoskay Yamamoto. As for Yoskay Yamamoto, he continues to blend his Asian heritage with urban pop art in these mixed media pieces seen below. The show kicks [...]

This was one of the most "pure fun" art shows I've seen in a while. It must be pretty hard to hang plush in a gallery setting, but they pulled it off with good lighting and a cool backdrop. Credit to Katie and G1988 for an awesome show and inviting me in early to take pictures. Art toys abounded, but no one was taking themselves too seriously between the spooky muzak and Kaiju Big Battel's psychedelic presence. It's also always great to see (in person) art by international designers I write about (like Tim Tsui, the inimitable Doktor A and DGPH to name a few), and it's also nice to watch local artists like Leecifer and Anna Chambers have their pieces snatched up quickly. For those who couldn't make it (the show runs through November 1st), enjoy a virtual tour below.

Cover Band and Crazy 4 Cult help illustrate part of the appeal of designer toys and urban art for those of us born in the 70s and 80s: the artists are inspired by the same things as the fans. It's not just the style of art that's great; it's the cultural iconography that makes it enduring: Devo, Sex Pistols, Nirvana, Radiohead, The Ramones...

Seriously, Alex Pardee is consistently invigorating the art scene with inspired moves like this. Not only did I have this cassette, but I’ll show my age by saying that I probably also had a “She Bop” cassingle. [Remember that brilliant idea: 2 songs on a big chunk of plastic?] Not that I had any idea [...]

Sunny first blogged Crazy 4 Cult 2 & Ain’t It Cool News’ collab contest here, and since then Gallery 1988’s blog has been packed with the kind of imagery that makes us film buffs and cult geeks remember why it’s OK to never leave the house. G1988 currently has two contests running: Though entry into [...]
