It Came From Skullbrain and the Imagery of Japanese Toys

This weekend saw the opening of a custom toy show based around the imagery of Japanese toys. It Came From Skullbrain profiled the talent (much of it local) from the Skullbrain forum, an off-shoot of San Francisco's Super7, which hosted the event. The night was already off to a great start when a good old Japantown-style fight broke out in front of Super7 shortly before doors. But to truly appreciate your toy art in the most surreal way possible, you need four guys in full KISS regalia.

Gear), you owe it to yourself to visit Patrick Ma’s haven for high end adventure gear and designer toys. Enter the garage doors to one [...]

Dustin Cantrell’s custoMONDAY Plasma Dunny Goes Viral…And The Winner Is…

Dustin Cantrell’s custoMONDAY reached critical mass ( I’m referring to that in the literal meaning, not saying a bunch of biker activists quickly took note). For Dustin, sudden attention like 9,000+ views on Gizmodo (not to mention being deemed worthy of translation on Spanish Gizmodo) and his own “Dustin Cantrell” tag on HypeBeast was staggering. [...]

custoMONDAY: Win a Plasma Dunny by Dustin Cantrell

Dustin Cantrell crossed my radar when his interactive custom Mad*L (crossed with a Bleep Labs Thingamakit) joined the ranks of last year's ME Mad*L show in San Francisco. While T.W.E.R.P. took third place in the juried competition, it was first on my mind. Now it blips, bleeps and alights in my house with me. If you've ever been to a hands-on science museum (or, alternatively Spencer's Gifts at your local mall), you are aware of the fun of touching these plasma-globes and conducting the electricity within. Combine that with your love for designer toys and you've got Dustin Cantrell's Plasma Dunnys. Or, more correctly: we've got them. Dustin made a limited run of just three metallic silver Plasma Dunnys for ToyCyte. We will offer two of them through ToyCyte's new store later this month (stay tuned). But if you want to get one of these unique, interactive, awesome figures for free, you'll want to enter...custoMONDAY.

Vinyl Toy Network Winter 2008: The ToyCyte Round-up

Vinyl Toy Network Winter 2008 was a lot of fun and a great opportunity to chat with artists, toy companies, shops, fans and collectors. People were lined up hours in advance to get a crack at exclusive art toys by Joe Ledbetter, Kathie Olivas, Frank Kozik, Gary Ham, Doktor A, MAD, Marka27 and others. Customized [...]

Dustin Cantrell at VTN Winter 08

The artist with the Dunny above is Dustin Cantrell. He was circulating VTN with his bro and a backpack containing custom Red Mars AsteroiDunnys. Dustin has an eye for aesthetics and a brain for circuitry. He showed me a cell-phone pic of a work-in-progress Munny that conducts electricity like a cooler cousin to something you'd find alternately at a hands-on science museum or at its lowest common denominator, Spencer's Gifts.

Me MAD*L show at D-Structure San Francisco

The show kicks off at 6:30PM in the Lower Haight (right across from Upper Playground). There [...]
