Doktor A’s Sweeny Podd Asian Exclusive

Following the Gentleman’s Club VTN-exclusive Stephan Le Podd, Doktor A now brings us this striking black and red colorway, called Sweeny Podd. The newest MINDstyle Mechtorian is an Asian Exclusive, and rumored to be a very small run at that. Doktor A weighed in on the conundrum of countless colorways with this refreshing perspective on SpankyStokes: My [...]

Doktor A’s Mechtorians Mini-Figures from MINDstyle

I realize I’m mostly alone in my love of mini-figures. My question to everyone else is where are you getting the money and space for big vinyl? Some of the mini-figure backlash is undoubtedly QC-related, but with mini-figures from MINDstyle, it’s really not something to worry about. Earlier this year, MINDstyle announced the forthcoming release [...]

Vinyl Toy Network Winter 2008: The ToyCyte Round-up

Vinyl Toy Network Winter 2008 was a lot of fun and a great opportunity to chat with artists, toy companies, shops, fans and collectors. People were lined up hours in advance to get a crack at exclusive art toys by Joe Ledbetter, Kathie Olivas, Frank Kozik, Gary Ham, Doktor A, MAD, Marka27 and others. Customized [...]

Exclusive Toys at VTN Winter 08

Here’s just a sampling of some of the exclusives from the VTN Winter 08 show. (Click here for a tidy tagged version of all the coverage.) People who had been waiting in line for hours got right to business locating these particular figures. It seemed to me like much of the crowd got in, got [...]

Doktor A’s MINDstyle Mechtorians Soon to Bring Steampunk to Storefronts

MINDstyle’s email referred to the Doktor A figure you see above as its “finest lineup of art toy collectible figures.” WOW, coming from MINDstyle, who, I feel, puts out some consistently quality art toys, that’s saying a lot. If this figure looks familiar, it’s because ten resin paint masters (below) of these guys were released [...]

Think-UP a Monstrous Halloween With Miscreation Toys

Many moons ago, when ToyCyte first kicked off, Jeremi Rimel contacted me with his Think-UP Do-It-Yourself Bust. He sent me a Think-UP, we chatted about some things and then we lost touch. In the meantime, busts got big. Recently I saw Doktor A's Think-UP creation at the Monster Art Rally, Jeremi got back in touch, and here's the lost interview (now found), right in time for Halloween. Think-UP is produced by Jeremi's company, Miscreation Toys. The white vinyl busts are 8 inches tall and come in standard and "with tentacles" editions. Master monster-makers like Bob Conge have customized this unique platform. The humanoid head/creature base is ripe for the rendering. Now without further ado, here's Jeremi...and Happy Halloween.

Plush Monsters Descend on San Francisco: A Virtual Tour

This was one of the most "pure fun" art shows I've seen in a while. It must be pretty hard to hang plush in a gallery setting, but they pulled it off with good lighting and a cool backdrop. Credit to Katie and G1988 for an awesome show and inviting me in early to take pictures. Art toys abounded, but no one was taking themselves too seriously between the spooky muzak and Kaiju Big Battel's psychedelic presence. It's also always great to see (in person) art by international designers I write about (like Tim Tsui, the inimitable Doktor A and DGPH to name a few), and it's also nice to watch local artists like Leecifer and Anna Chambers have their pieces snatched up quickly. For those who couldn't make it (the show runs through November 1st), enjoy a virtual tour below.

Doktor A Custom MADL for LIFT Show

Doktor A has broken my heart yet again. How did this magnificent streampunk customizer who is known for “Character driven clashes of urban pop culture, classic children’s stories and neo-Victorian industrial neverlands..’” almost make me cry this morning? By looking at his insanely beautiful and gorgeously executed “Blavatski & Sons Automated Kismet Disseminator” custom he [...]

Noxious Fumes @ Rivet Gallery

Rivet Gallery is two-for-two with this flyer for their upcoming group art show. The flyer itself looks awesome, and the name of the show is intriguing. “Noxious Fumes” is a great theme for a group exhibition. A lot of people are drawn to artwork with gas masks, and I expect Noxious Fumes will have some [...]
