On our ToyCyte forum, Steve Talkowski announced he was working on his first vinyl toy, Sketchbot. He posted a few prototype sketches on his blog, and he recently started the sculpting process. In Phase One of the process, he made a 3D sculpt out of wires and aluminum foil. It’s amazing that he has not taken a figure-sculpting class since college. After using Super Sculpey to flesh out the form, he baked his prototype in the oven.In Phase Two, he carved the prototype and applied a second, thin layer of Super Sculpey. The overall shape looks cool, and I look forward to seeing the finished prototype.
I had no idea how sculpts are made, so I think his blog is fascinating. The most interesting part of the process is the way he transfers a 2D sketch into 3D form. It made me realize that the toy-making process is scientific as well as creative. You can see more images of his progress in his Flickr set.
