Tokion Magazine was founded in 1996 and began devoting many pages to the then still-taboo topic of graffiti. “Neo-graffiti” is a term they coined in the title of their Neo-Graffiti Project 2000, which featured classic subway graffiti artists working in new media. This was back in ‘99. It’s practically ten years later and a lot has changed. For one thing, street art was born and its proprietors became superstars. Phillips de Pury is putting four neo-graffiti visionaries on the auction block (well, painted cast vinyl and plastic creations they made). Lots 155-158 (beginning here) include rotocast vinyls by Os Gemeos, Shepard Fairey, Margaret Kilgallen and Barry McGee. Each figure is from an edition of less than 300. The Margaret Kilgallen piece is an artist’s proof. Links to the project have all expired and lead to a defunct Tokion-USA domain. These would be a great addition to a graffiti, street art or urban vinyl fan’s collection. The auction begins at 12 Noon in New York on October 25th and the four pieces are estimated at $200-$300.
