Misc, custom, events, resin

Wondercon is many things to many people (case in point: there was a booth advertising a dating service for self-professed geeks), but it wasn’t exactly bursting with art toys. We did our best to find them. Eric Schrecongost’s Nemoids caught our attention. There’s something cute about the diver bots, which also present some options for customization. Perhaps explains the word “nemoid,” which, according to the Urban Dictionary, is a “slang word originating in Mississauga, Canada, that is used to describe any person, animal, act or thing that is thought of as cute.” But probably not. Eric asked us which of the sample colorways seemed the most interesting, and Jason and I both responded to the aged patina Nemoid. Eric hopes to get these produced. Leave a comment here if you get a strong feeling for one of the four Nemoids in particular. Shortly before we left, I saw Eric chatting up Ryan Hungerford, so maybe Patch Together is a consideration for production. We’ll keep following, so here’s hoping there’s more where these came from.

I love these guys. Please send me more info or a link to a site. I was unable to find any other information about the artist or these figures.

I love these figures. They sort of remind me of the Big Daddy’s from Bioshock. I got to talking to the creator and we figured the bright green one seemed like it was one of those ghosts from the scooby doo cartoons. these were honestly the only hand made items at the whole convention that i wanted to buy. I can’t wait to see them mass produced for comicon. I just hope they’re not too expensive :) . It’s hard to pick a fav because i love all 4 color schemes but i think if i had to pick i like the one on the far right the best due to the realism.

Any more info on this guy? i forgot to take a business card or something from them.

I would seriously buy every single one of these Nemoids. I’ll be looking for them…….

  4. rustedhalo Says:

I would buy just about anything that has the Patina or Rusted look to it. All 4 designs are great but if I had to pick just one I’d go with the Patina just because it came out so perfect. I’d be curious to see how these would come out though mass production. The sculpt is already perfect, I’d say just find someone to make molds and bust out some and hand touch the patina and rust effect. That way each one is almost OOAK and hand made.

I got to see these guys up close and they are supa-dupa amazing! I hope Eric produces these, because they are really well designed and unique!

  6. Yardarm51 Says:

Man I like all of them. Really. I would love to see these guys in production and hopefully they would come in sub $60 so folks can afford them even in today’s dismal economy. Love the little fleur-de-le accent on the rusty one. Please keep us up to date on these guys and their creator.

  7. Eric Schrecongost Says:

Thanks for all the feedback everyone and for all who were at Wondercon, thanks for stopping by the booth. Wondercon was the first time I showed the Nemoids protos so I am very happy to hear what you guys think. I am really looking forward to getting them produced, it seems like the patina color scheme was the show favorite.

I am putting some final touches on the Nemoids.com website so check back in a couple days and it will be up and running. Also I will be at SD Comic-Con in July.

  8. Yardarm51 Says:

Thanks for the update Eric. Can’t wait to check out the site. Will these guys be self produced or are you looking to work with a larger producer?

  9. Eric Schrecongost Says:

I would like to find a larger producer but how ever it works out, they will get made and they will be affordable for people. But if any one hay any suggestions or info on that, toy factories or color ways i would love to hear them.

Good to hear form you Eric. I posted about the Nemoids over on the Toy Break/October Toys message board. http://www.octobertoys.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=2979 You should join us over there. I’m sure there’s a wealth of information on getting these put into production. The people that run the boards are in the toy industry and have there own line of toys produced “Gwins” and I’m sure you’ll find them very helpful and informative. Can’t wait to see what you have at SDCC, I’ll be there for sure.

  11. Eric Schrecongost Says:

Awesome, I will see you there! Thanks for spreading the word on the Nemoids. I am friends with George and the October gang. Toybreak! I really love all the stuff they do and he has already provided me with a plethora (yes plethora) of information on toy production. They are wise.

What do you guys think of the hatch opening? Yea/Nay

  12. Everfalling Says:

hatch opening: yea. it’d be neat to see some little controls inside.

i remember you talking to me about putting characters in the view port like the yellow one. i think if possible you should make that optional. i think some might like the idea of the Nemoid being autonomous (i know i do) and a human figure stuck on the front would negate that. maybe have replaceable view ports? or perhapse a cardboard insert you can slip behind the bars so you have the option of different looks into the figure or none at all.

  13. Yardarm51 Says:

If you do make it so the hatch opens I think you should leave the interior plain and completely empty. That allows customizers to do all kinds of cool stuff with the space. By keeping the space behind the bars solid it will allow customizers to decide how to use it. If they want to make it window like they can cut the piece out themselves or leave it in and just paint something on there. Lots of potential in this fig.

  14. Jeremy Brautman Says:

I agree. I think when we were at your table Jason commented that it would be cool to put a pic of someone trying to get out. Which made me think of Charlie on LOST for a sec. Not to sound like I’m trying to keep you on ToyCyte (def check out October Toys), but any companies who are reading (and several are) may look to a figure posted with lots of comments/hype as something worthy of production. These days everyone is trying to gauge interest, and I think it’s clear this piece has it. Awesome!

  15. Eric Schrecongost Says:

Those are excellent points and I completely agree with you guys.
Like Yardarm said, allowing customizers take some things to the next level is key. Keeping the interior completely plain would probably be the way to go if the hatch is going to open. Everfalling’s viewport insert idea is also very clever.
Today i was working on some different arms for some variants. Any suggestions? I’m shooting for the arms to have some nice articulation with ball and socket joints in the shoulders and hinged elbows to help pose this guy out if so desired.

Thanks Jeremy! I’m fortunate that you have such a great forum for this because Toycyte really allows this to happen.

any progress on this? nemoids.com still doesn’t exist.
