Until The Maker Faire, I was bereft of any knowledge of needle felting. Then I saw NifNaks and now no one’s pulling the wool over my eyes anymore (groan-inducing pun, sorry). I found a simple explanation of the phenomenon within the Needle Felting Webring here:
Needle Felting is felting without water. Instead, you use special, barbed felting needles (the same used in industry today) to push the top layer of wool into deeper layers. The unique property of wool fiber that allows it to “stick” to itself causes the wool to felt, without the need for soap and water.
Is needle felting the new black? Could wool be the new vinyl? Check out these three (out of 90+ pages tagged “needle felted”) Etsy shops and judge for yourself. Left to right above: Haunted Raggedy Ann from The Paper Moon Gallery, Custom Bunny Rings and Pins from Made By Moxie, and Custom Realistic Dog and Cat Replicas (beats taxidermy!) by Amelia Makes Art.
