The latest Michael Lau figure set is a collaboration with Hong Kong high-rollers, Silly Thing, based on character’s from Juno Mak’s animated music video featuring the DJ duo, SOFT HARD. For those who have been pondering the meaning and implications of phrases like “based on,” “tribute to,” “homage,” and “intellectual property infringement,” following Futura’s comments, another Lau figure in someone else’s signature style may not sit well. But while Futura’s words rang loud and clear, I think this particular example is more in the vein of the recent Daft Punk Be@rbricks. Not to downplay the issue, which has been on my mind, and is something for all of us to think about.
The Silly Thing x Michael Lau x Juno x Soft Hard figures are rounded out with some other goodies like a making-of DVD including the music video and interviews. It all goes on sale November 15th, and France’s Artoyz blogged that they should have some in December.
