ToyCyte: Toy Culture Collected

Coming in January 2009, Marmit is unleashing a prepainted and assembled version of their jumbo 60cm (just about two feet tall) Alien kit. It’s a drop-dead gorgeous and meticulously detailed rendition of the titular ‘Big Chap’ Alien from the 1979 classic Ridley Scott film.   Limited to mail-order, this Real Paint Kit will be JPY 18,900 plus JPY 3,000 added for assembly.  The order postmark deadline is October 31, 2008.  Marmit describes this as a ’soft vinyl coated pre assembled kit’.

As a total Alien fanatic since childhood, I’m thinking this has the potential to be the most accurately sculpted 1979-style figure of its size. It may rival the much-anticipated 300mm Medicom Real Action Heroes Alien, despite some minor detail quibbles such as this sculpt being based on an Alien suit statue that lacked ribbed wrists and some detail of the shoulder tubes. Marmit is no stranger to the Alien franchise, having produced limited metal rings, poly resin kits and soon a 30cm bronze statuette.

One thing’s for sure, with all these high detail figures from the past few years and more coming (creeping?) down the pipe, this is a really sweet time to be an Alien collector!
