For a country that tends to compact and miniaturize things, Japan’s sure got a weird giant fetish goin’ on lately. First with the (debatably fake) anime-crotch-train-girl, and now with this 59-foot tall Gundam RX-78-2 set to be displayed in Tokyo’s Shoikaze Park for two months, as shown in this promotional illustration.
Not only is the metal and fiberglass ultra-action figure the first life-sized, standing representation of the iconic mecha from the 1979 show, but it’ll also have dozens of light-emitting points, vents that eject a mist (presumably to represent show-accurate hydraulic robot-ness) and a moveable head. Japan, please say that this is your military program and not just a toy. Please.
The whole thing is being constructed by Bandai to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Mobile Suit Gundam cartoon. A similarly life-sized Gigantor statue is being planned, because robots are tremendously awesome. C’mon, Japan – impress me with a 140-meter tall King Ghidora. Or a genetically engineered Pocket Ghidora.

The picture is actually based on a toy diorama of that exact scene. The photographer took a pic of the actual toy of the girl from the diorama and photoshopped it into a picture of the rail line the toy is based on. It’s all very meta!

Duh. Forgot to mention that my comment is about the anime girl riding the train picture.
