Beyond Toys, designers

This year for Complex Magazine’s annual “Style & Design” collector’s edition issue, they invited KAWS to work over a cover and inside feature on N*E*R*D. [The concept is very similar to what i-D did recently with KAWS.] KAWS and N*E*R*D’s Pharrell are mutual fans. Oh to be in the Billionaire Boys Club. For instance, check out this exchange from the interview:

INTERVIEWER: Besides this shoot, I heard that KAWS recreated the Sistine Chapel in your house using Smurfs. Is that true?
PHARRELL: Yeah. I’m a huge Smurfs fan. And he did some Family Guy stuff for me, and he also did SpongeBob. There’s a bunch of that kind of stuff in my room.

There is no hate here. I love these pictures. Even though i-D did it first, having KAWS draw on photos is an inspired design endeavor that continues to work for me. Pharrell goes on to say [of KAWS]: “I like his mentality, I like how he approaches things—he makes use of negative space. But I think he does it in a great cartoon way.” You can see video of KAWS talking about the project here. Reminds me of home hearing him pronounce the word “ideas.”

Look inside the mag after the jump.
