Kaws in the New York Times Magazine

Beyond Toys, designers

I love the New York Times. I get it delivered to my west coast front door each and every day. This Sunday I was breezing through the Times Magazine to get to my nemesis that is the Sunday crossword puzzle (someday I’ll be smart enough to finish one) and out of the corner of my eye I saw a flying Smurf, a mutated Spongebob Squarepants and a pink Xs for eyes bunny. It was none other than a piece on everyones favorite overpriced artist Kaws! The article basically discusses Kaws upcoming official coming out party into the highfalutin art gallery world. This November at the Gerin & Lopez Gallery in New York, he’ll have a big solo show with new sculptures “including 33 bronzed, painted renditions of his own head” as well as a slew of paintings. Each will be priced at the “take me home” price of $25,000 and up. Ouch. One of the main reasons why Kaws wanted to do the gallery route was that because his painting generally are sold privately and that the images of the pieces that show up on the internet can appear computer generated. “People really have no idea what they’re looking at…I want them to be able to stand in front of the work.” I’ll stand in front of your work any day Kaws, if only I could! To read the entire piece go here.
