There were a lot of disgusting headlines in 2008, and one of the many gripping stories of “Bad Newz” was the case of former Atlanta Falcon, Michael Vick’s, animal cruelty. Vick, who had been operating a dog-fighting ring, is now serving almost a 2-year prison sentence for his crimes. As for the dogs, 22 pitbulls were seized and are currently being rehabilitated in no-kill shelters and foster homes.
“Urban Aztec” artist and all-around good guy Jesse Hernandez, and his frankly adorable family, are featured in the current issue of Sports Illustrated for their 9 years of dedication to pitbull rescue. The article, written by Jim Gorant, shows where many of the Michael Vick dogs are now. Jesse credits his wife Berenice “and her strong drive to help the breed, that I think is the dopest for sure.” Very very cool story and an unlikely place (mainstream sports mag) to see an artist from our community.
