Google “Black Dynamite” around the Internets. Lots of people are stoked on this upcoming blaxploitation flick. This is the story of 1970’s action legend Black Dynamite. When “The Man” murders his brother, pumps heroin into local orphanages, and floods the ghetto with adulterated malt liquor, Black Dynamite is the one hero willing to fight all the way from the blood-soaked city streets to the hallowed halls of the Honky House.

The movie is headed to Sundance, which is where David Choe, who did the art is going. The movie poster is an inspired addition to the annals of fine blaxploitation posters everywhere. David said they may release some of the posters for sale. Hipsters clear some wall space!

What’s a Muppet Whatnot?

It all comes back to Jim Henson, really, when you’re talking about inventive, expressive puppetry, and by extension, plush. Jim Henson Studios and FAO Schwartz (purveyors of super-high end, designer collectibles) have teamed up to offer an awesome create-your-own-Muppet ‘Whatnot’ custom workshop. Right now, you can go to FAO’s New York City location and have your Muppet made on the spot, or starting on February 15th, you can use FAO’s online template to create your Muppet.

For now, FAO offers a $130 kit which comes with a variety of templates and body parts, not unlike a set of colorforms or paper dolls, as well as a gift card for use in the final Muppet production. No expense seems to be spared, as these are full-sized 16″ hand and rod puppets, just like the originals. If you’ve seen the behind-the-scenes puppetry tutorial given by Jim Henson on the Muppet Show : Third Season DVD, you just might be as excited about this as I am. Maybe it’ll just be nice to have someone to talk to.

Peekaboo Monster’s Vision Quest - VTN Exclusive

Yet another item to add to your Vinyl Toy Network shopping list. Debuting at the VTN in Pasadena, Silent Stage will be offering up a very colorful and whimsical limited edition print of artist Peekaboo Monster’ s “Vision Quest” from Vivisect 5 artwork.

This Giclee print will be limited to a edition of just twenty-five prints. It measures 17″ by 9 ½” and may be offered at the VTN for $65 (this is the info that was posted on the VTN site ) or perhaps it will be 12″ x 24″ and will be sold for $85 (this is the info from the Silent Stage Toys site). Your guess is as good as mine. Looks like you’ll have to go to the show to find out. If any prints don’t sell at the show, you can pick up unsold copies of it at the Silent Stage site. Price? Who knows.

Doc Von Block Gets Ill

Much like the Beastie Boys (except different), Scott Tolleson’s Doc Von Block be illin’. Following the original Doc Von Block seen at SDCC 08, Scott and Julie B of Pretty in Plastic are releasing three colorways: natural, x-ray and my personal favorite, illin’ green. Below are photos of factory paintmaster samples from Scott and Julie’s blogs. The forthcoming wooden figures are about 6 inches tall and will be on display at VTN. Edition size is as-yet undetermined but promises to be less than 200 per figure. Lots of folks will be getting wood in December (that sounds bad). Between the Pecanpals, Switcheroo’s output and a host of new skate decks, we’ve now made a category just for wood stuffs.

Stuff This Show Features Over 30 Plush Artists

Starting Saturday, Rivet presents Stuff This, their second annual plush group show. This exhibit will feature over 30 artist from around the world, many of whom had work in the recent Monster Art Rally show. Doctor Tongue’s Extreme Makeover

Lately, the zombie news seems almost as infinite and expansive as the inevitable zombie hordes themselves. Not only does Sideshow continue with their ‘The Dead’ line, and Mezco and Peril Unlimited also have their own zombie collection - but Amok Time’s Doctor Tongue might just be the skeeviest of them all.

Forget about the jiggly intestines of Mezco for a moment - this 7″ figure from George Romero’s Day of the Dead has a jiggly, jawless tongue. As seen in this production shot, the original head sculpt with ‘real’ hair has been scrapped for sculpted hair, as the original ‘real’ hair didn’t look ‘right’ - whatever ‘right’ might be for zombie hair, which I can only presume is a very nebulous definition, and ninth or tenth on the list of zombie priorities, after ‘eat brains’, ‘my leg’s almost fallen off, hindering my ability to eat brains’ and ‘walk slowly towards eating more brains’. Nevertheless, Amok Time has changed their Doctor Tongue design, and the resulting figure is a fan favorite, 7″ tall, $18 zombie.

Uamou x El Coco Loco = Capsule Bag

I may not be homeless, but I am a bag lady. I love a clutch, a hand bag, a flirty purse. So needless to say when I saw the Capsule Bag - a collaboration between Uamou and El Coco Loco - I noticed just a wee bit of drool trickling from the corner of my mouth.

This nylon and leather bag is approx. 17cm. (6.5 inches) It comes with a leather strap that can be used to convert the bag from shoulder sack to handbag (and really, who doesn’t love some versatility). The white 4cm (1 1/2 inch) Uamou figure is trapped inside the clear capsule of the bag and he can’t be removed, so don’t even think about taking him out to play with him.

The bag comes in two versions, black and the silver, and they cost about 8900 yen ($95 (USD) and is available from the Uamou webstore here.

Stroller Styling With Peskimo

You know when you look back at pictures of yourself as a child and you think, man that banana-yellow Datsun my Dad drove me around in sure made me popular? You now have the power to break the cycle of embarrassment–for both you and your spawn. Since writing about Kid Kustoms’ designer strollers, my eyes have been opened to the secret of how hip and fashionable being a parent must really be. Before I saw these, I couldn’t get past the pee and puke, and now something has changed and I think that thing is Peskimo. Undoubtedly, Peskimo eased me into an increased comfortability with bodily functions via their Monster Burp figure. And now, ToyCyte’s new bud Jamie of Kid Kustoms sent an update on their latest customized stroller fenders, including the above one by Peskimo (proceeds from its sale will go to UNICEF).

Peskimo have been creating characters together since 2002. Their illustrations and animations have adorned vinyl toys, clothing, magazines and TV sets worldwide. They have a small band of monsters working for them in a grotto. Each participant (invite-only) in the Kid Kustoms stroller project is provided a set of fenders. While interchangeable on any of the Kid Kustoms Roddler strollers, the finished products will be displayed in prominent galleries worldwide, and auctioned off on a custom mounted frame, signed by the artist and with a letter of authenticity. The winners will be selected by D.A.W.S subscribers and “the readership from the esteemed magazines providing event coverage.” Each category’s winner will be auctioned off on a Roddler, with proceeds from all sales being donated to the artists’ choice of participating charitable foundations (One is Greater than None, UNICEF, Sacred Circle, Action Against Hunger and Conservation International).

Michael Lau Nike Air Crazy Force Colorways: Insane Prices

Damn. I was feeling the installation of the Michael Lau x Nike Crazy Force 1, more than the figure or the sneaker when I wrote about the black and white version last week. Now Lau’s gotta go and drop 25 variants of the 6-inch Crazy Michael figure with different facial colors all signed with crazy hand-drawn eyes (limited to 150 pieces). Of course, my eyes strayed to the lime variant (below) and now I’m, you could say, green with envy. All of the figures were blind-boxed and are most definitely sold out. There was also an extremely rare all black version, limited to just 10 pieces for friends and family only. A cursory scroll through eBay shows some speculative selling of the B&W figures at, ready: from $600 to over $800. Now that’s just crazy. [pics via CrazyToyz]

December seems to be the month for all the very awesome events and releases going on this year. FEWMANY just announced their December event: From December 1^st through December 7^th, Fewmany is happy to start the month with one of their events called “Iten”. This means that they will be showcasing one-offs by over 40 artists (including one of the hardest working men in Japan, Touma). The theme of this show will be “Red vs White,” and each artist will be submitting their own one of a kind piece in one of those colors. We Kill You Brings Padihershef V2 Into the World

Today at noon (California PST time) or 3pm (Toronto Time) the second version of the Padihershef V.2 by We Kill You will be available for purchase directly from the WKY webstore.

This new version of this grinning mummy figure is “painted in my favorite Kaiju colorway” says the Padihershef creator. You may recall this figure from the we Kill You Halloween set: it was the last of the four pieces. The figure will be limited (of course) and will retail for $40.

About Padihershef:

Spending his mortal days as a worker, Padihershef was killed at a young age after being crushed by falling stone. He sunk into the underworld, a dark and chaotic place, where he set forth on a journey to reunite with his soul and make it back to the day-lit world he once knew and loved. Mekazoo x Patch Together = Robolucha

The fine folks of Patch Together have released images and preorders for their next big thing, the Robolucha designed by Mekazoo, almost a year after the original design submission. I know for a fact that robots like to rock ‘em and/or sock ‘em, so full-on wrestling was a natural progression.

The Robolucha comes in three colorways, and like Janus, the Roman god of gates and doorways and patron deity of janitors, each colorway has dual faces - one on each side of its head, which can be spun to reflect their intent. Standing at 6″ tall and limited to 300 of each variety, these guys can be ordered until December 15th for a special pre-order price of $30, as opposed to the regular price of $45, or a three pack to complete the whole armada. Just keep them on separate shelves, or their never-ending battle for superiority will keep you up at night.

Crazy Pop Skullbox from ARTDENKA

The brainstrikers ARTDENKA from Japan want you to know that DKE is distributing their crazy vinyl from Hell figure, Skullbox. Influenced by punk rock and horror, they want to spread the gospel that toys are art. That’s a mantra ToyCyte can get behind. Skullbox is about 4 inches tall with 7 points of articulation. He’s made of high-quality Japanese vinyl. The packaging includes a sticker and a postcard. Edition size is 350 pieces. Start looking for these in your local shops. ARTDENKA is Satoshi Tsukaya (illustrator/CEO), Shigeta Tanaka (illustrator), Yoshifumi Okita (web creator) and Maki Nobe (director). One glance at their MySpace page and you’ll agree that these folks are having too much fun.

Argonaut Resins x Jared Deal Vlad the Vampire Ice Edition

Due to the popularity of the first run of 13 resin Vladimir figures by Jared Deal and Eric Nocella of Argonaut Resins, Vlad is back–and his intentions are transparent. He wants to go home with you, but he won’t bleed you dry. On Halloween, Eric revealed a trio of True Blood translucent red Vlad variants, which were snatched up quicker than a goth kid at a vampire bar. Now, the team is getting ready to drop a rainbow of 9 Vlad variants on December 5th at 12PM EST in the Argonaut shop. Each figure stands 5 inches tall, and the coffins measure 5 1/2 inches. All figures come complete with a certificate of authenticity signed by Jared Deal (designer) and Eric Nocella (sculptor). Each certificate will come in a wax sealed envelope. With the exception of the pic immediately below, the other photos should be considered works in progress and not necessarily indications of the colorways that will be available. Of course, I chose to show you the clear green Vlad, which I think looks awesome. The painted green figure underneath is a turnaround of my Vlad from the first edition for reference.

Limited Edition Brian Castleforte Wack & Blite at VTN

Brian Castleforte aka Wack & Blite toys will present a very limited edition of one of his creatures at the Pretty in Plastic booth at this weekend’s Vinyl Toy Network. The limited Wack & Blite toys will be in a very special secret colorway series. And when I say limited, I mean REALLY limited. There will only be six of the figures available for sale. Each one will come with a special print and some very special packaging. No word on the price. They will be sold both days or until they “sell out”.

Wack (King of the White Tribalnots) and Blite (King of the Black Tribalnots) are “wild, fanged and clawed jungle dwellers” are from two enemy tribes in Brian Castleforte’s imaginary land of Wammbodia. These Tribalnot creatures debuted last June.

WACK: The King of the White Tribalnots is kind to a fault, tireless in his altruism and driven to defend his fellow Nots with a manic psychosis. Simply, Wack is the nicest Not you’ll ever meet and loves to spend his time cooking, especially baking or riding the Eternal Wave out on Lake Kakatittienottie. His passion for Wammberries is legendary and has led to his nickname “The stoned King,” which might be part of the reason he’s just so nice…BLITE: The King of the Black Tribalnots is loud, obnoxious, foul mouthed, egomanical and tough enough to back it up. Zombie Priest Enjoys Confession and Brains

Just when you thought that Sideshow Toys couldn’t get any darker than their Mall Santa Zombie figure from their ‘The Dead’ line, they use Black Friday to hit us with a full-on Zombie Priest, showing that there are no limits to their delightful depravity. Now, if they give us a Zombie Rabbi, we have the beginnings of a hilarious joke.

Sideshow’s ‘Harbinger’ was an immediate buy for me, as I’m swept up into the waxing and waning zombie craze. For $75, the 12″ figure comes with a bible and rosary beads, and the exclusive version comes with a raven perched atop an eviscerated hand. He’ll make an excellent addition to the zombie Babysitter, Street Prophet, Soldier and the other creeps that Sideshow has already made. I admit - after I saw this, I immediately went out and bought Ash Wood’s ‘Les Mort 13‘ figure, because I imagine they’ll be really interesting companion pieces. Subject 2221 : The Harbinger should ship in the winter of 2009.

Adam Hughes’ Exhibitionist Black Queen

Here’s one to explain to the missus.

Sideshow Toys has an ongoing series of 16″ tall comiquettes which explore the most powerful females of the Marvel Universe, as envisioned by Adam Hughes. The thing about Adam Hughes is that in his Universe, everyone has gigantic breasts and no one really bothers covering them up. It’s everything that keeps comics from being taken seriously, and it’s everything that keeps a certain audience of fans coming back for more. DC Comics produced a line of a dozen mini-busts based entirely around Hughes’ art and the obvious ‘bust’ pun that’s irrevocably entangled with female comic characters. But I digress.

Hughes’ sexually overcharged Black Queen actually surprised me. Fully decked out in S&M gear the likes of which we haven’t seen since McFarlane’s Twisted Fairy Tales, whip and all, the Black Queen follows previous 1/5th-ish scale figures of White Queen, Black Cat and Rogue, all selling in the $150 range for 16″ of sexy polystone. Beyond the questionable content, Sideshow’s stuff is always beautifully made, and this one is scheduled to ship in Spring of 2009. The Sideshow Exclusive version will include a bonus print of Hughes’ original artwork.

Some potential ways to explain this to your girlfriend :

The Dark Phoenix Saga was an amazing comic event. (She won’t know any better - it’s comics and it wasn’t about shoes or cooking!)
It’s an homage to the recently deceased Dave Cockrum.
It’s a companion piece to Sideshow’s White Queen comiquette.
It’ll surely increase in value so I can buy you that fancy wedding ring.
It’s an icon of female empowerment. Like Rosie the Riveter… but with enormous boobs. Of power.

Turn in Circles with Jeff Soto

Jeff Soto’s solo show Turning in Circles opens today at the Riverside Art Museum and runs through February 21^st, 2009. This new exhibit will feature about twenty new painting that Soto has been working on during the last year reflecting his newest thoughts and ideas. Along with his paintings, there will be a super big fifty foot wall installation. Now that’s some big art.

Sadly Soto won’t be in attendance at the opening; he’ll be at the Art Basel event in Miami. The “actual public reception” will be December 13^th from 6-9pm–the event that Soto can make! If you are in So Cal, you should for sure check out the show. The Riverside Art Museum is located at: 3425 Mission Inn Ave., Riverside CA 92501.

Wreck the Hallz Teddy Troop Custom Show

Wreck the Hallz with custom tooooys, fa la la la la – la –la-la –la. Okay, singing via a blog entry may not be all that cool but the Wreck the Halls show at Genuine Artikle in Brooklyn happening on December 20th at 8pm will surely be. This jam packed holiday show is a celebration with Immortal Beloved Toys (the New York based vinyl toy store) and the gallery, Genuine Artikle. The show will proudly feature a whole slew of Flying Fortress Teddy Troop Customs, just in time for Christmas.

Some of the participants are: Brent Nolasco , Betso , Miss Kika, Nasty Neil, Julie West , Joe Capobiaanco, Ms. Stephanie, Slow Joe, Julio Rodriguez, Okkle, Kono, Brian Viveros, SoppaJDelux, Charles Rouse and Zam. Super 7 x Gorilla Biscuits Available Today!

Today, December 2^nd, at 5pm (Pacific time) the Gorilla Biscuits figure by Super7 will finally be available to the general public. This soft vinyl figure is a five inch rendering of the infamous hoodie-wearing Gorilla that acted as a mascot for the beloved band, the Gorilla Biscuits. The grinning ape sports a gray-ish hue, a blue hoodie and some sweet jet black hair.

The first version of the figure is being released in conjunction with the Gorilla Biscuits tours of Japan and Australia in December of this year. On the tour, just a limited quantity will be available. How about if you adore the Gorilla Biscuits or you just really love this figure and you just have to get one but you won’t be jetting off to Japan or Australia anytime soon? Well you will be able to have the chance to get one, if you are lucky, directly from Super7 today!

The piece will be available at the San Francisco Super7 store and online for $55.
