Et tu, Doctor Who?
While I’m not completely sold on this whole new aesthetic of kid-friendly 2″, unarticulated, super-cute fantasy characters that Hasbro started, I can’t help but be a little swayed when all of my favorite science fiction properties are sucked into its mighty whirlpool of toyetic regression. Last week, it was Hellboy and Mezco, and this week, it’s Doctor Who from Underground Toys. I have to admit that it’s awesome to see the competing members of the delicate toy industry acknowledging each other and playing nicely together. Someone out there wanted to see Doctor Who hangin’ with Chewbacca.
The first set of these ‘Time Squad’ miniatures is scheduled to arrive in March, and will consist of three 5-packs. In a stroke of pure awesome, each pack will include a colorway of the omnipresent Dalek. The contents are as follows :
Pack 1 will include a Cyberman, a Black Dalek, Scarecrow, Vashta Nerada (the awesome skeleton astronaut) and a Sontaran. Pack 2 will include a Bronze Dalek, a Sycorax, a Natural Ood, a Pyroville Centurion and the Clockwork Man. Finally, Pack 3 will include the Supreme Dalek, Davros (essentially a fourth Dalek for your army), The Tenth (David Tennant) Doctor, a Slitheen and the Weeping Angel. It’s quite a collection of great little creatures, and they’ll fit in perfectly with the rest of the various figures from this growing (and unexpected) aesthetic.
[...] every franchise is getting both small and cute after the success Hasbro has had with the format. First up is Dr. Who and if you’re not at least a little in Dr. Who, I must question your nerd credentials [...]
