Derailed Locals Derailed All Aboard

Just got back from the Derailed Custom Train show. It’s so great to see art locally (and local artists) after all the NYCC hype (and drooling). Santa Cruz is kind of a collision of students, skaters, punks and hippies, and although every block of downtown has a self-styled musician in need of a bath, the city is also ripe with rising counterculture.

Cardboard Spaceship hosted the event which was co-sponsored by Bigshot Toyworks and All City Style. There was beer, music, live painting and most of all: art. Cardboard Spaceship reserved a wall for local artists. I got a chance to chat with Jesse Hernandez who confessed he’d only started his train (kindly priced at $420) last Sunday and Santa Cruz’s Kemic who specializes in bodypainting (and priced his train at an economical $65.)

Other train engineers included: Frank Kozik, Jim Koch, Betso, Dril one, Reactor-88, Indie184, Scribe, David Flores, Bucky Lastard, Motorbot and many more. Check out the pictures for inspiration and then head over to All City Style to download 3D and paper models to make your own.

UPDATE: If you were in the show and would like to have your name/page/blog included above, just leave me a comment below. Or email jeremy (at) toycyte.com. Click the thumbnails below.

UPDATE 2: PRICELIST & MORE PICS AVAILABLE NOW @ The Cardboard SpaceBlog. Prices from $65 to $1000. (Kozik’s train is already sold.)

Dril One-They were hanging trains all night and maybe it wasn’t up when I was shooting (I photo’d early before it got too crowded). I just snagged a photo off your site and put it here. Hope that’s cool. Until I get back from today’s events, you’ll be the only one with a caption as a consolation prize…
