Interview with OsirisOrion

Q: What’s your background and day job?

A: I’ve been drawing ever since I was a kid. I was always fascinated with drawing monsters. I grew up on anime, comic books, horror, sci-fi and godzilla movies. I never really had a knack for drawing cars, women or buildings so it kind of discouraged me from trying to get into comics! I tried to draw everything I could when I was younger, but it all came back to monsters. It wasn’t until I saw Sam Kieth’s The Maxx comic and H.R. Giger’s work that I realized art can be anything you want it to be, so I decided to sway from the norm and hone my style. I decided to go to college for art when I got out of highschool, but I didn’t get much for financial aid, so working 60 hrs plus a week and going to school full time took it’s toll, and after a year I dropped out. When I was in my 20’s I decided to get into tattooing, which I did for 2 years but that ended miserably, so I put my art career on hold and stumbled into security as a career. It wasn’t until last year when I picked up a diy mini munny that I started to seriously think about getting back into this again but using vinyl toys as a canvas.

Q: How did you go beyond the canvas from flat to 3D and onto toys?
A: It was definitely not an easy thing for me to do. I was heavily into bio mechanics and I was primarily a pen and ink artist. I loved working in black & grey, I very rarely used color in my work. I wish I had a lot of my old bio mechanics drawings but I lost quite a few pieces. It was a lot of trial and error, and it still is only now I’ve become a lot better at not trashing a piece because I think It looks horrible.

Q: Tell us a little about your process and the materials you use?
A: It’s kinda hard to describe, but there is a fair amount of insanity in my process. I use everything from acrylic paints, markers, ink, sculpey, airbrush and spraypaint. My sculpts and hand painted customs are 2 somewhat different styles. My sculpts are more kaiju influenced, where as my hand paints are more horror / abstract influenced. With a vinyl toy I lay down a base color with either spray paint or airbrush. My 8″ custom cave dweller dunny is a great example: I used a pink spray paint for the base, then all the blue was laid down with paint marker, after that I did all the line work with ink, and all the shadowing and detail work with transparent airbrush paint. I used the airbrush paint with a brush and apply it as a wash. I do my canvas work in a similar way: a few things changed here and there. Some custom pieces I just totally airbrush, but those ones usually are my sculpted pieces. My newer “paintings” are all done digitally in Corel painter, but generally follow the same process.

Q: Your pieces have a very visceral quality–and by “visceral,” I’m referring to the meaning of the word that pertains to the organs and cavities of the body. Is that a fair description?
A: I think that’s a fair description! I just didn’t want to slap a generic monster design on a vinyl toy and call it a day. Since I liked drawing a lot of bio mechanic stuff, I experimented with taking all the metal type objects out of that and just used a very fleshy organic type of line work. The first 2 pieces I really tried this style out with were the ones I did for the House of Liu custom show at APW Gallery in NYC. Sometimes these designs I do have no real meaning to me, I just like the way they look. But someone can see one of my pieces and make up their own story or meaning to it and I think that’s really awesome. I always like when people come up with their own views on my work.

Q: Some of your creatures manage to seem simultaneously scary but also scared. I’m thinking in particular of The Keeper of Time and The Terror Before My Eyes. Are these rabbits monsters or mutations? What’s going on?
A: They are definitely rabbits, but rabbits of an unfortunate fate! The Keeper of Time piece is a cartoon tragedy in a way. This poor rabbit is just hopping along and stumbles upon an old pocket watch. The rabbit is fascinated by the watch, because he’s never seen anything like it before. What he doesn’t realize is that the watch is possessed and by carrying it around with him he has sealed his fate. “The rabbit cannot die, if the watch still keeps time” and the watch will always keep time because it’s possessed. Have you ever seen something so horrible but you couldn’t look away? That basically sums up The Terror Before My Eyes piece, only the rabbit is pulling his eyes open and the terror is quickly wasting him away. A lot of my work has animals, monsters or both together, in pretty messed up situations.

Q: I read in your interview at SpankyStokes that your toy collection encroaches on your living arrangements. I think this is an ongoing struggle for readers with roommates, partners and spouses. Care to give any tips for peaceful coexisting?
A: My Fiancee and I are best friends and I think that helps a lot. She has a huge beanie baby and Hello Kitty plush collection, plus she loves dunnys and some of the vinyl stuff I collect. We both love anime and have a lot of anime collectibles in our place–mainly pvc anime figures on top of all of the other stuff we got. So we keep a good balance by displaying all of our stuff in the apartment. I guess if you have someone that doesn’t like those things it could be hard, but I don’t know anyone that doesn’t collect some type of collectible. So if you find a balance like displaying both of your things maybe be a good thing, it works for us…well I did try to sweet talk her into moving her beanie babies out of one the detolf cabinets we have, to make room for my kaiju stuff and that didn’t go over so well. I guess I will just have to buy another detolf cabinet [laughs]

So visually delicious with all that blue brain cabbage. Mmmmmmm good!

This is the rabbit that stayed in Mr. McGregor’s garden
after Peter Rabbit escaped. Little did this rabbit know
that Mr. McGregor was watering his garden with water from
a stream full of experimental fluids from the genetics
lab just upstream. Peter Rabbit ate from the garden and
later became the Easter Bunny, but this rabbit stayed in
the garden for weeks eating his fill every day until one
day the cat scared him. The fear-filled event activated
some strange chemicals within his body that caused him
to transform into an 8 inch polyvinylchloride rabbit
capable of eating whatever he wants. The sound that comes
from this creature’s chewing mouth full of fangs is as
follows, !KRONCH! !KRONCH! !KRONCH! !KRONCH! !KRONCH!

So whenever the young animals of the forest hear the
creature eating they tell each other as they’re running
home, “Let’s get out of here before the KRONCH gets us!”
And so he has become known as “the KRONCH”
