Cleveland artist Chris Ryniak, who has a new toy on the horizon and a recent feature in Hi-Fructose Magazine, will launch his new “Bug Jar” series of customized vinyl figures this Friday at Shoparooni.com!

The Bug Jar Series will feature customized mini figures from MINDstyle, Kidrobot and other companies. One custom figure will be released each month, and the figure itself will not be revealed until the buyer has received it. Each will be a unique, hand-painted and sculpted custom figure from lines such as Kathie Olivas’ Scavengers and Kidrobot’s Dunnys.

The first custom, a Scavenger named “Button Eater,” will be released tomorrow, Friday, February 27th at Shoparooni at an unspecified time. Retail for the Bug Jar Series will be approximately $200 each, depending on size. There will also be some very special Bug Jar releases at the upcoming Dragon*Con in September at Chris’ table in Artist’s Alley.

What an awesome idea..would love to get my hands on these. Knowing Chris’s work, these will be amazing.

  2. Jeremy Brautman Says:

I like the idea in theory too, and no disrespect to the artist who deserves the clams, but damn, who is buying blind these days for $200???

  3. Steve Brown Says:

Well, when you consider that his new paintings start at $900 and up, getting a new, original work by Chris for $200 is a steal.

We’re just making it a little more fun. ;) You already know the quality of his work, you know the platform…

  4. Chris Ryniak Says:

Jeremy, no disrespect to anyone, but who buys a production vinyl for over 200, 300, 400 1000+?

    answer, lots of people.

I can guarantee that I put as much effort into these small customs as I do with any of my work. So don’t expect a watered down version of the larger stuff.

Like Steve said, it’s just a fun way for people to get something unexpected.

Hey Chris–that’s an even better question you pose: Who is buying BLIND production pieces at those prices? I’m trying to figure out if people still enjoy the “fun” and “magic” of buying blind in this economy. No one I know personally seems to, but you’re right–lots of people still are. So who are you? Separate from that existential question, I look forward to seeing the Bug Jar reveals.

Came and went in just a hair over 3 minutes. Guess the Shoparooni shopping cart was running slow. ;)

Two people actually got orders in before we pulled it, so the second order gets a Chris Ryniak Mini-Print/Postcard Set at no charge.

Guess at least two people are buying blind at $200 a piece with no reservations. I think that speaks to the quality of Chris’ work, personally…
