What’s a Muppet Whatnot?

It all comes back to Jim Henson, really, when you’re talking about inventive, expressive puppetry, and by extension, plush. Jim Henson Studios and FAO Schwartz (purveyors of super-high end, designer collectibles) have teamed up to offer an awesome create-your-own-Muppet ‘Whatnot’ custom workshop. Right now, you can go to FAO’s New York City location and have your Muppet made on the spot, or starting on February 15th, you can use FAO’s online template to create your Muppet.

For now, FAO offers a $130 kit which comes with a variety of templates and body parts, not unlike a set of colorforms or paper dolls, as well as a gift card for use in the final Muppet production. No expense seems to be spared, as these are full-sized 16″ hand and rod puppets, just like the originals. If you’ve seen the behind-the-scenes puppetry tutorial given by Jim Henson on the Muppet Show : Third Season DVD, you just might be as excited about this as I am. Maybe it’ll just be nice to have someone to talk to.

Stuff This Show Features Over 30 Plush Artists

Starting Saturday, Rivet presents Stuff This, their second annual plush group show. This exhibit will feature over 30 artist from around the world, many of whom had work in the recent Monster Art Rally show. We’re increasingly taking note of plush art at ToyCyte, and artists like Anna Chambers, Cuddly Rigor Mortis, Curster, Lana Crooks, Monster Factory, My Paper Crane, Sebastian Curadeau, Shawnimals and The Soreheads should be familiar to our regular readers. The other names on the flier are surely soon to grace these pages.

Teetersaw Wants You To Eat Your Friends

I love the idea of plush forms based on scientific principles, from adorable diseases to smiling internal organs to lava-spewing volcanoids, so I dig the Food Chain Friends by Teetersaw. It’s not too often that you find designer plush that fit into each other like so many hungry, Russian nesting dolls. They appeal to both my love of plush things to shove between myself and my cold, cold wall, and my desire to eat any and every animal that is smaller than myself.

Sure, they’re not actual, biological creatures that have ever existed on Earth, so the educational value is nil, but they’re cute, and they come in chains that can be mixed and matched, since they’re relatively indiscriminate about what they put in their mouths. See how many creatures you can fit inside the gargantuan Lankum, and work your way all of the way down to the tiny Zezzel. And while that whole last sentence is an amazing euphemism for indescribable acts, the Food Chain Friends are stuffed with innocence and each other. The Alpha and Beta series are out now, covering the plains and forest habitats, so keep an eye out for the upcoming Gamma series, too!

Take A Bite Out of These New Plushes From Cutesypoo Toys

It’s time to get your cute on, this time in the form of two new releases from the plush loving team at Cutesypoo Toys.

First, you take a big bite out of Little Miss Egg Tart. This 3.5″ x 1.5″ plush is based on the wildly popular and very yummy Chinese dim sum dessert. There are two versions of Little Miss Egg tart: One where she is brandishing a happy grin and the other where she’s a wee bit sleepy and is in the midst of a full-blown yawn. This piece is limited to just 500 and it retails for $15.

And to follow up your Egg Tart, take a bite out of Musseloom produced by ESC Toys. This piece was designed by Jayson Thiessen of Cuteseypoo Toys fame. Spök-spök Drops a Tiny Toofhairy

If you’re anything like me, you prefer your teeth two inches tall and fuzzy. My dentist might have sweaty, terrifying nightmares about me, but Spök-spök clearly understands. They’ve miniaturized their popular Toofhairy plush piece to a convenient pocket size, and limited their first edition to only 1000 of the little dental darlings - and one in every twenty will be an extra, dangerously adorable pink. That’s only 50 pink teeth!

Each one comes attached to a little clip, for added portability. Attach yours to a bookbag, a belt loop, or any spare loop that you find yourself lugging around. For only $6 each, you might as well buy 32 and slap together a whole plush mouth. Sure, it’ll be useless, and sure, the surgery would be prohibitively expensive and idiotic, but plush teeth. Need I say more?

This is for the person on your holiday gift list who has everything. And by “everything,” that includes a shiteous stomach bug, which is what I’ve been in the grips of for the last 72 hours. I’ve expressed my curiosity before as to who, exactly, collects toilet toys and how, precisely, do they display their doodie? Rather than a satisfying answer, I found this: a new collection of toilet toys by Auckland, NZ’s Geek Freeks. Unlike me, who ponders the prevalence of plush poo, the Geek Freeks decided that since everyone else is making some brown, they shall too. And they’ve taken it a step further: “as they say you can’t do poos without wees!” The highbrow collection now includes poo, pee, snot and sharts. Regarding that last one, those of you who don’t win this week’s Touma contest might want to investigate that based on your entries.

Keep Your Hands Off Of My Meebas

I’m never sure how to feel as I witness the quirky ‘designer’ toy aesthetic merge into the mainstream more every day, but yesterday, I was suddenly taken by the Meebas - a collection of 40 amoebic plushes from Mattel.

One can’t deny that the many forms and different colorways borrow heavily from Shawnimals, Giant Microbes, and the super-adorable non-animal designs of the plush revolution, rendering them nigh-irresistable, but they also borrow from the thrill of the mighty blind box. Each Meeba is secreted inside a tube which can only be opened when the Tamagotchi-like program on the outside of the tube is nurtured properly - implicitly incubating the Meeba in the harsh, cold, plastic womb.

They might be for girls, with tubes in all manner of pinks and pastels, but this strange merging of the digital pet with a palpable reward in the way of a ‘designer’-ish toy is a deadly combination. At $17 each, and 20 more forms and colorways due out this winter, I think it’s time to prepare for the Meebas invasion.

This take off on the Shawnimals Wee Ninja is a master of collectible hobbies.” Geeky Ninja has a fond appreciation of all things limited run - especially comics, toys, and pop culture at large. This is a first collaboration and release with DDP - Devil’s Due Publishing (they are also doing Ninjatown comics and items like Ninjatown journals…to record all your Ninja action). Get Your Plushy on at Plush You! Opening at Double Punch

Are you a plushy? Do you love any and all things soft, furry, and cuddly? Well, if you do, you best be getting your adorable lovin’ self over to the Double Punch store and gallery in San Francisco tonight. This evening, opening at 6pm and going to midnight, the Plush You! show kicks off. This is an annual exhibit that features a wide variety of plush creations from here, there and everywhere. We’re talking plush creatures from all around the world.

The show is the brainchild of Kristen Rask, the owner and curator of the store and gallery Schmancy in Seattle, Washington. The first Plush You! show debuted there in 2005. Each year the event gets bigger and bigger. This is the second Plush You! event this year, the first was last month at Schmany. Yeah, those plushies are on the move! Sarah Palin Cabbage Patch Kid Sells For $19K

You thought Kaws‘ pieces were expensive? Well, move over 4 ft Kaws, you’re about to get schooled in pricey by a Cabbage Patch Kid. Yes, a Cabbage Patch Kid. Ending yesterday, on Election day, the auctions on ebay for the one-of-a-kind custom Sarah Palin, Barack Obama, John McCain and Joe Biden handcrafted dolls came to a close.

So what did they go for you may be wondering? Well, a pretty tame rendition of Joe Biden went for $3550.01. The John McCain doll (which looked an awful lot like the Biden doll) went for $6,000. The Obama Cabbage Patch Kid went for a respectable $8,4000. And a rendering of the world’s most famous Hockey Mom? Well, the Sarah Palin doll went for a whopping $19,000! Yup, nineteen grand is a pretty penny to pay for any kind of custom plush. But all the proceeds go to charity so maybe the winner doesn’t just have a Palin fetish but maybe they just really wanted to give money to Toys for Tots.

ToyCyte Goes to A.P.E.

Although this year’s Alternative Press Expo (A.P.E.) had a handful of things working against it (Halloween hangovers, torrential downpours and competing events, among them), San Francisco’s Concourse was still flush with art, comics, books and a handful of toys (which I was hunting).

As hosting city, Bay Area artists and companies were out in full force. Cool to see Hi-Fructose, Giant Robot and Super7 all in a line on the main floor. Over on the left mezzanine, I picked up one of Alex Pardee’s “god damn corgi puppy cute” signed giclees and the recently reprinted issue #2 of Bunnywith at the fully-stocked ZEROFRIENDS booth. Then I had to check out some new Beastlies by Leslie Levings (who will be doing a Beastlie for custoMONDAY next month!) and finally, I came face to face with The Putrid Pal.

Shotgun Sean from ZEROFRIENDS

Because I arrived at A.P.E. on its second day, I made a beeline for ZEROFRIENDS to procure one of Alex Pardee’s 8×10 giclee prints done up all special for the occasion. Got to meet Shotgun Sean, quite possibly the nicest guy whose name bears arms. The booth was stocked with prints, copious shirts, Bunnywith, Alex’s Awful Homesick book and free postcards.

The Devil's Panties

Color Ink Book

This was a pretty cool concept: Color Ink Book. The Brothers Washburn publish a “DIY art periodical,” which they hope helps fuse artists and art enthusiasts.They also had some fanged plush Crayons on hand.

Thylacine Graphics

Perhaps too shy to look directly at the camera, but clearly not due to a lack of talent. I really dug the art and displays at the Thylacine Graphics booth. I’m guessing the A.P.E crowd wasn’t the ideal market for this work, but I’d love to see more. P.S. His business card features a customized Munny.

Michael Fleming of Tweedlebop

Not sure why I thought the creator of the Putrid Pal (produced by Crazy Label) would be foreign (because the character is French?) but imagine my surprise upon learning that Michael Fleming lives just a couple towns away? I got the last of the standard colorway Putrid Pals, which Michael kindly autographed. I also got a mini-comic concerning how true friends stick together. Really nice guy. (Michael, that is. Though I’m sure The Putrid Pal is amicable too.)

Camilla d'Errico

Always a pleasure to talk to an artist who is super-stoked to be making toys. Camilla d’Errico ellaborated on some of the hints she’d dropped to Nic in this interview about the upcoming MINDstyle figures, her Bax Bears and something in the works with 3A. It’s all kind of hush-hush, but if her energy is any indication, some great stuff is on the way.

Crystal Silva

Character designer and model-maker Crystal Silva had these hand-made poly sculpts of a figure called Clarence. They’re designed to hold objects. Check out more of her 3D work at her website.

Snuggle Up With Some Sperm

From the realm of things that should never be made cuddly, anthropomorphic or enlarged thousands of times their actual size, Giant Microbes has announced their plush Sperm Cell. Not to let the little guy travel out into the world by himself, he’s accompanied by an Egg Cell, and four plush parasites : Toxoplasmosis, Gangrene, and Red and Black Ants. These 6 alarming additions to their microbe collection mark the release of the complete Fall 2008 line. There are certainly more fun ways to bring their diseases into bed with you, but I’d venture that these are a lot more comfortable and require less penicillin.

Of course, there’s a Penicillin plush, also. Just don’t let it meet your Syphilis across the vast plains of your bedsheets.

While the whole collection of plush forms are based on the actual appearances of the tiny cellular entities they’re named after, they all take on the appearance of adorable monsters. The grey frown of Polio was never more desirable. All of these plush run about $8 each, or $13 for a pack, or ‘petri dish’ of three downsized plush.

Lana Crooks Unleashes Crooked Critters

A giant octopus, a fearful squid, Japanese cranes, a tiny geisha, pirates, and even a zombie will be there! It may be the day after Halloween but it isn’t a costume party: It’s Lana Crooks’ Crooked Critters show at A.Okay Official. This solo exhibit features all new plush work and other curiosities.

Lana, a self proclaimed “plushinator”, creates illustrative works with fabric. They are soft sculptures with an attitude. From plush that fits in the palm of your hand to the larger than life, each has been injected with a bit of twisted humor, a dash of whimsy and a whole bunch of cotton fiber. Her pieces are not cuddly throw pillows, most hang on the wall, fixed in place, while others are in fact content to sit on your couch.ToyCyte readers will be familiar with Lana’s critters from Rock the Future and Monster Art Rally. This exhibit showcases Lana’s new hand-made and one-of-a-kind works (and a few custom vinyls). Crooks’ Crooked Critters opens November 1^st 2008 and will be up for viewing until November 30^th at A.Okay Official in Chicago, IL. Presidential Candidate Cabbage Patch Kids

I thought the Pinkerton FX Zombie Hamsters were creepy, well they got nothing on these dolls. The company that makes the Cabbage Patch Kids is celebrating twenty five years of misleading children about their origin (yeah, come on…babies born in a cabbage patch, we all know that storks bring us home). And how does the Cabbage Patch Doll people opt to celebrate a quarter of a century of baby makin’? Why with totally creepy Cabbage Patch representations of the current presidential and vice-presidential candidates. They created one-of-a-kind handcrafted dolls of Sarah Palin, Barack Obama, Joe Biden and John McCain. Where oh where can you get one of them for yourself you might ask? They will be up for auction starting this Thursday on eBay and the auction will end on November 4th, election day. The proceeds from the auction will all go to the US Marine Corps Toys for Tots Foundation.

Midwest Plushform Show Sneak Previews

The reveals include softies by ToyCyte homies Phoebe Marie (in collaboration with Rancid) and Chris Ryniak, as well as innovative submissions by Cheryl Andrey, Craig Tucker and Sean Mahan. The 1st Annual Midwest Plushform Show is hosted by Shoparooni and Carol & John’s Comics and takes place from November 7th until November 29th at the two aforementioned locations in Cleveland. The show will open at Shoparooni on Friday, November 7th from 8-11PM, and at Carol & John’s on Saturday, November 8th from 8-1PM. Both shows will close on Saturday, November 29th, from 8-11PM.The Plushform is a blank, do-it-yourself plush figure made of a primed, canvas-like material intended to be customized by any means necessary! Artists can use paint, markers, pens, applique, and pretty much any other material to customize their Plushform, making an a work of art in cute plushie form! Beware the Zombie Hamsters!

Okay, if I saw one of Pinkerton FX’s Zombie Hamster coming towards me out in the wild, well, I’d not only be walking the other direction, I’d be running! The creator has kept the public up on the developments of the Hamsters mutating, sharing their early version, sculpts to the finished product here. It comes in different sickly undead hues of Puss Yellow, Cursed Earth Brown, Putrid Pink and Toxic Green.

Every one of these seven inch creepy creatures was handmade, has a “weighted butt”, and I quote, “ready to eat your brains”. They are made of resin and have custom painted eyes, so each and every one of them is different and unique. Some of the figures come with claws, and some, have been safely declawed and don’t. As an added bonuc, some of them made a wacky sound and the other make a chirping sound when they tossed around. Plus you can get one custom made if you have any special zombie requests.

McDonalds Makes Me Grimace

After what seems like an eternity of hot, flame-broiled anticipation, Huckleberry Toys has finally released the beginnings of their potentially extensive McDonaldland action figure line, inspired by the original 1976 Remco line. The first assortment includes updated versions of Ronald McDonald, Mayor McCheese, Grimace, the oft-forgotten Captain Crook, and The Hamburglar. Keep an eye out for special variants of as-yet-undisclosed figures.

I can’t deny the hypnotic appeal of the psychedelic McDonalds commercials from my youth, beckoning me into a world of endless french fries and meat patties, so these have a special place in my heart. Right next to the suspiciously Grimace-shaped clog. Unfortunately, don’t expect to see any of these guys on TV anymore - McDonalds stopped ‘marketing to children under 12′ due to growing obesity concerns. One little fat kid strokes out in the ball pit and we all have to suffer.

While the line was originally going to include my personal favorite fast food character, Mac Tonite, I’ve been informed that McDonalds plans to take their advertising in a different direction. So, while a second series has been planned, and last year’s Toy Fair revealed a fair number of prototype figures, time will tell if we’ll ever see The Professor, The McNuggets, Birdie, The Fry Kids, Officer Mac, or even such obscure food luminaries as CosMc or Iam Hungry.

Bwana Spoons x Switcheroo

Sweet sweet Switcheroo, these girls on to something. Switcheroo is a company by the ever fabulous artists and toy designers Amanda Visell and Michelle Valigura. They design, create and commission various items made out of plush, resin, wood, metal and paper. Yeah, everything but the kitchen sink!

On their “projects” section of their website was a work in progress of a piece designed by the ever prolific Bwana Spoons of Grass Hut Corp fame. The piece for Switcheroo is entitled Rainbowasaurus and features a rainbow bodied creatures who just happens to have a couple ultra cute birdy friends. This figure was apparently based on a painting by Bwana that was done in 2005. “Rainbowasaurus is part of my peeples world and lives on forest island with his brother franz”. No word on when, how, or where about the piece but it does look pretty damn intriguing. Stay tuned for details!

Tado, Thomas Han and Gargamel Circus Punks Up For Auction

Customized plush has completely taken off in recent years, but some might credit Circus Punks with starting the craze. Circus Punks refer back 150 years to their Americana predecessors–the knock down dolls. Carnival booth proprietors handpainted the dolls, which were then battered by baseballs in the quest to win large, deformed stuffed animal prizes. Paul Cruikshank resurrected the art with Circus Punks. Many a famous vinyl toy artist has lent his/her style to a Circus Punk, and on October 25th, the Phillips de Pury auction will take bids on three by Tado, Thomas Han and Gargamel (lots 146-148 starting here). We previously profiled Koji Harmon and Kiyoka Ikeda’s Circus Punk/vinyl Hedoran limited edition combo here. The Tado and Thomas Han Punks are both unique one-offs, which could explain the estimated pricetags of $800-$1200. Happy bidding!

Bholu Handmade Toys From India

Bholu is the work of Australian designer Jodie Fried. Bholu products are designed in Australia and brought to life by traditional Gujarati women artisans from the remote desert communities of The Rann of Katchchh, Western Gujarat, India. Each piece is hand embroidered using traditional techniques, giving each product its own unique and original personality. Bholu’s bubalahs children’s range is based upon drawings by children age 3-7 who come from underprivileged slum communities. The toys are handmade with wool felt and hand-embroidered. By using their traditional skills, the women artisans gain an income creating independence and opportunity for them. The toys are $65-$95 and can be ordered online here.

‘Designer’ Plush Deglingos Forged in New Jersey

All New Materials has announced a new line of ‘designer’ plush called The Deglingos, forged from deep within Dwarven fabric mines beneath Montclair, New Jersey. Represented within the line are a series of animals that appear to have been cobbled together from your favorite pair of jeans, that bridesmaid’s dress that wasn’t that horrible, and that sofa that you once did unspeakable, awesome things on.

Inasmuch, they’re certainly untraditional in appearance, Frankensteinian and unrepentantly asymmetrical. The original series of ten includes a lobster-based creature, which plays directly to my weakness for all things tentacled and beclawed, so whether or not these $40 plush are ‘designer’ in the truest, artistic sense is up to the collector. T9G released their new Yumenoko “Neko” figure in Japan at The Contemporary Fix. This figure fuses vinyl and plush together to make an original look. The way the guys came up with this character is very simple: Remember the Chesire Cat in Alice in Wonderland??? Well, do I need to say more? By making that lovable cat into a more psychotic lovable cat, I say T9G came out with another success. This cat is available in Japan. And for all you overseas collectors, not to fear, they will be available in the following stores. Try giving them a call to see if they got them in. ~~~Meow~~~~~

Touma Solo Show Exclusives Up For Web Order

Until teleportation becomes a reality, most of us will have to enjoy the solo shows of our favorite artists from a virtual distance. Such was the case with Touma’s recent exhibit at Paradise Toy Land in Taiwan. The often-masked Touma did live painting and signing and brought with him a bunch of hand-painted toys. Happily, our friends at Paradise are making the exclusives available to the rest of us through the power of online-ordering. They have paintings, vinyls, plushes, masks and more listed on their blog here. Check out the selection and note the prices in USD (overseas shipping and a 3.5% PayPal surcharge are not factored in). The items will be available through Sunday (while the exhibit runs), and then shipped out on Monday, October 27th.
