Buff Monster’s Magenta Demon Seed Drops Tomorrow

Pink is easily the frontrunner when it comes to color of choice for kaiju figures. So it kind of makes sense that when pink aficionado Buff Monster released the first edition of his Kaiju For Grown Ups figure last November, he had an even pinker version in the works. The clear magenta Demon Seed is [...]

Today’s Pornographic Kaiju : Zetton Second Generation

I don’t know whether to run in fear or buy this thing a drink and hope to get it back to the apartment. Spied over on Hobby Search (my favorite destination for surreal monsters paired with minimal information), the Zetton Second Generation figure is scheduled to hit in the next week or so from Yamanaya, and [...]

Mini Borugogons or Kaiju Fry Guys?

Andy from Kaiju Korner sent in some release news on his exclusive Monstock Mini Borugogon coloway: kaiju berry version.  The mini-figures (which call to mind what would happen if McDonalds Fry Guys fell into a vat of toxic shrink sludge) will be released Wednesday, May 20th at 12 noon (Taiwan time = GDP +8) for [...]

The Soft Vinyl Icarus And His Beard

I’m not sure if this kaiju wants to destroy my city or provide me with a supply of lumber through the harsh winter. Or maybe rescue me from a deceptive wolf. Either way, Ultraman’s Icarus means business. Spied over on Hobby Search, and just way too awesome to not talk about,  Ikarusu Seijin (or Alien Icarus) [...]

Venus Flytraps by Paul Kaiju Still Available

Our pal Christian, over at Bbulb, wanted to let you know that there are still a couple of Paul Kaiju’s Popsoda Venus Flytrap figure still available. Paul referred to the paint on this piece as using “quite a bit of layering” (as if you couldn’t tell). There are just 20 of these in existence, and [...]

Le Merde’s We Are Brothers II at Super 7

Saturday was the Le Merde “We Are Brothers II” Show at Super7. After spending the last several weeks crying like a baby that I couldn’t attend the first “We Are Brothers Show” at Thrashout, I was pretty stoked the hear that Mike was conveniently coming back to San Francisco for another show at Super 7. I’m [...]

Collin David and Bob Conge for Multiple Personalities 2

There aren’t as many perks to being a toy website editor as you might think, but on a personal level, I get to create the joy of pairing up contributor Collin David with one of his heroes, Bob Conge, in a post about the Multiple Personalities 2 show. Collin’s custom Mellow is called ‘The Golden [...]

On Location at Super Festival 49 in Tokyo

The 49th International Model and Toys Super Festival was held this past weekend in Tokyo. This show is a bizarre combination of flea market and exhibition held a number of times each year. It provides a great opportunity for the local toy makers, dealers, producers and fans to mingle and gaze longingly at a lot [...]

Toybot Studios Brings the Bling to Auction

San Francisco’s King of Bling (Kirkland Jue is hating me right now) returns to form with this Semi-Ninjin Bling figure, which features more than 3,000 hand-applied rhinestones. Kirk is clearly still in the rhythm he established with his bedazzled Pimp Meister Many Mey. The glamourous new 8-inch custom figure is available as part of Saturday’s [...]

You Can’t Catch Me, I’m The Gorgon Seijin

I can’t get enough kaiju lately. Remember when I was joking about calling upon the fearsome gingerbread man a source of kaiju-inspiration? That was no joke. Gorgon Seijin appeared in 1980’s Ultraman 80 episode 13, ‘Formation Yamato’ – an alien creature that could disguise itself as a human and summon the Salamandora monster. And for some reason, [...]

Large Monster Burako Has His Head In The Wrong Place

I feel like it’s my personal duty to hunt down and muse upon some of our finer modern kaiju, what with the influence they’re having on today’s toy customizers, but I think that the less influence that Burako has upon our fine toy destroyers, the better. Burako, from X-Plus’ Large Monsters series, hails from Ultraseven episode [...]

It Came From Skullbrain and the Imagery of Japanese Toys

This weekend saw the opening of a custom toy show based around the imagery of Japanese toys. It Came From Skullbrain profiled the talent (much of it local) from the Skullbrain forum, an off-shoot of San Francisco's Super7, which hosted the event. The night was already off to a great start when a good old Japantown-style fight broke out in front of Super7 shortly before doors. But to truly appreciate your toy art in the most surreal way possible, you need four guys in full KISS regalia.

Kirkland Jue for It Came From Skullbrain Show

Here’s our last It Came From Skullbrain preview, rounding out the talented trio of locals that began with Bert, followed with Leecifer and now closes up with San Francisco’s own Kirkland Jue. Kirkland’s pieces include his take on Toygraph Space Troopers: “They are supposed to be Zombie Troopers in a nuclear aftermath,” he writes. “Their [...]

The Dread-locks of Ultraman’s Dangar

In the tumultuous wake of all of this Skullbrain kaiju custom stuff, I think it’s important to refresh the toy palate with some genuine, oldschool kaiju : rich in variety, eerily inspiring, and so freakin’ weird. Coming straight from 1971’s ‘Return of Ultraman’ Episode 9, “Kaettekita Urutoraman”, or “Monster Island S.O.S.” (as opposed to the usual [...]

Leecifer for It Came From Skullbrain Show

Leecifer, “toy ruiner,” just sent in these great photos of the latest figures on which he’s reaked his artistic havoc. I don’t think anyone yet suggeted Super7’s Gorilla Biscuits figures as part of his current custoMONDAY contest, but no doubt someone’s dream blend of hardcore, punk, art and toy will collide  Saturday when Leecifer’s latest [...]

If it looks like it glows, it’s because it does. The little guy comes in two colorways, and is blind packaged. [...]
