Starting Saturday, Rivet presents Stuff This, their second annual plush group show. This exhibit will feature over 30 artist from around the world, many of whom had work in the recent Monster Art Rally show. We’re increasingly taking note of plush art at ToyCyte, and artists like Anna Chambers, Cuddly Rigor Mortis, Curster, Lana Crooks, Monster Factory, My Paper Crane, Sebastian Curadeau, Shawnimals and The Soreheads should be familiar to our regular readers. The other names on the flier are surely soon to grace these pages.

Exhibit will run December 6 through December 31, 2008. Purchases will be available for early pick-up and shipment for the holidays.

December seems to be the month for all the very awesome events and releases going on this year. FEWMANY just announced their December event: From December 1^st through December 7^th, Fewmany is happy to start the month with one of their events called “Iten”. This means that they will be showcasing one-offs by over 40 artists (including one of the hardest working men in Japan, Touma). The theme of this show will be “Red vs White,” and each artist will be submitting their own one of a kind piece in one of those colors. Turn in Circles with Jeff Soto

Jeff Soto’s solo show Turning in Circles opens today at the Riverside Art Museum and runs through February 21^st, 2009. This new exhibit will feature about twenty new painting that Soto has been working on during the last year reflecting his newest thoughts and ideas. Along with his paintings, there will be a super big fifty foot wall installation. Now that’s some big art.

Sadly Soto won’t be in attendance at the opening; he’ll be at the Art Basel event in Miami. The “actual public reception” will be December 13^th from 6-9pm–the event that Soto can make! Wreck the Hallz Teddy Troop Custom Show

Wreck the Hallz with custom tooooys, fa la la la la – la –la-la –la. Okay, singing via a blog entry may not be all that cool but the Wreck the Halls show at Genuine Artikle in Brooklyn happening on December 20th at 8pm will surely be. This jam packed holiday show is a celebration with Immortal Beloved Toys (the New York based vinyl toy store) and the gallery, Genuine Artikle. The show will proudly feature a whole slew of Flying Fortress Teddy Troop Customs, just in time for Christmas.

Some of the participants are: Brent Nolasco , Betso , Miss Kika, Nasty Neil, Julie West , Joe Capobiaanco, Ms. Stephanie, Slow Joe, Julio Rodriguez, Okkle, Kono, Brian Viveros, SoppaJDelux, Charles Rouse and Zam. And the event looks like it will be raising some fund for Toys for Tots, cause someone less fortunate can use some toys too!

Coarse Toys Take On Berlin

The Coarse Toys NOOP show that debuted earlier this year at Rotofugi went pretty damn well. The stunning show was an awe-inspiring display of toy art. Now the crew of Coarse Toys (Mark Landwehr, Sven Waschk, and Chrissi Julich) are taking their vinyl magic to the people again, this time to Berlin, Germany, a bit closer to their home town of Hannover. The show takes place at 4010 Gallery and will open on December 10 at 8pm (and at 6pm if you are fortunate enough to get an invitation for the pre-party) and will be up until January 12^th. The show features brand new pieces for those lucky Germans to check out. If the Chicago show at Rotofugi was any indication, this show at the 4010 Gallery will surely be equally as amazing. So if you find yourself cold chillin’ in Berlin this winter, make sure to stop by.

Mr. Toast x Gallery1988 Online Art Show

While it’s always great to see art in person, online art shows let you check it out in your underwear. The most recent artist to hit the cyberhighway is Dan Goodsell, LA artist and creator of Mr. Toast. Starting tomorrow, Dan is having an online art show at www.88point5.com. The show “Donuts, Dreams and Winter Scenes” is made up of 29 brand new pieces, which will be available for viewing November 29th through December 20th. It includes a number of Dan’s paint-by-numbers paintings, in which he takes vintage paint by numbers paintings and adds Mr. Toast and his pals to the scenes. The show also contains a series of watercolors of donut characters which are new to the World of Mr. Toast. 88Point5 is the online venture of Gallery1988’s Katie and Jensen, who have been very supportive of the scene with their two meatspace galleries in San Francisco and Los Angeles.

While many American designers (Happy Thanksgiving, fellow patriots!) are starting to place hard rules on what and where they’ll draw for you, Australia’s Luke Feldman (aka Skaffs) will actually draw you (for one night only). Wednesday, December 10th from 5-8PM, Skaffs sets up at Rotofugi in Chicago. The event will feature caricatures, live drawing and art and toy giveaways. Sounds rad. Live drawing is the new live music.

It’s all about shopping locally this holiday season. Wild horses couldn’t drag me to a mall on Black Friday, though it’s sort of sinfully fun to chuckle at the carnage on TV. LOST Kubricks Meet Creator

In the battle between Northern and Southern California, I’d like to point out that Medicom’s LOST Kubricks hit the San Francisco scene first (see LOST Kubricks Wash Ashore in San Francisco). However, Los Angeles does know how to throw a star-studded party, and that’s exactly what they did last week at Hollywood’s Meltdown Comics. JJ Abrams made the event, along with series producers and writers, lots of fans in Dharma gear and several cases of Kubricks. The entire crew signed a 1000% Be@rbrick to be auctioned for the Children’s Defense Fund, although it may be the case that the woman in the picture below made off with it.

The occasion also led into the debut of a smaller, but similar LOST 100% Be@rbrick ($15 here). L.A., not being able to miss a publicity stunt, filmed the whole thing for possible use on LOST’s season 5 DVD. Check out the LA Weekly’s coverage here.

Kathie Olivas and Brandt Peters Signing at Cardboard Spaceship

Wow. This is going to be crazy. Cardboard Spaceship is a tight space and Kathie Olivas and Brandt Peters have a dedicated army of fans. My guess is that there will be a line stretching down Santa Cruz’s Pacific Avenue (so prepare to be spare-changed by well-fed hippies). Kathie and Brandt will be signing for just an hour, from 7-8PM on Friday, December 12th. $20 gets you a doodled Scavenger blank (with proceeds going to Toys for Tots). It’s strictly 1 sketched item per person and no more than 2 items signed. No sketchbooks or non-toy items allowed. Cardboard Spaceship recommends you show up early and reserve a spot. ToyCyte chimes in that there are plenty of folks hanging idly on the avenue should you need a mule to hold your spot while you get a slice of pizza.

Weapons of Mass Construction Show

Project Detonate’s Yosiell Lorenzo dropped us a line about his upcoming Weapons of Mass Construction show with Matthew Ryan Sharp opening at A Okay Official on December 5th. About the show:

East Coast meets Midwest in this friendship forged out of admiration and respect for each others craftsmanship, character development and use of materials. Matthew Ryan Sharp and Project Detonate decided to to exhibit new and existing works in this 2 man show tackling issues of addiction, obsession, robbery, heartache and mischief.

Together producing almost 90 pieces of original art on wood, paper, panels, plaques and found objects with brushes and spray paint being the weapon of choice. Both artist decided to combine quality and quantity while keeping the cost to the Chicago art patron low, due to the current economic status of the world as well as the fast approaching holiday season.

Project Detonate currently resides in New Haven, CT. Matthew Ryan Sharp dwells in the suburban outskirts of Chicago, IL

Jubi’s Buxshi Designer Toy Exhibit

Taiwanese designer, Jubi, is having a design exhibit for his vinyl figure, Bushi Gakki, which he’s been working on since 2007. The exhibit brings together designers from Taiwan, Japan, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore. Each artist will interpret Jubi’s Bushi Gakki character. Bushi Gakki is a kid who adores Japanese culture and Rock&Roll music. He was inspired by the story of “Wu Song,” a hero in the “Water Margin,” famous for slaying a tiger with bare hands. The “cute samurai” figure will be for sale beginning December 20th. There will also be a signing with the artists. The exhibit runs through January 4th, and is sponsored by Phalanx, Paradise, MANIC and Red Bull. You can see more pictures of the production line at J.ME’s blog here.

Joe Ledbetter’s Mr. Bunny Original Paint Masters, Roto Molds and Spray Masks on Exhibit

How unbelievably cool is this? Hope that’s shatterproof glass, because you know this guy’s got a hatchet. Mike Slobot turned me on to Wilmington NC’s Cameron Art Museum, which is currently showing the Toy Crazy exhibit. Among the “wildly diverse and irreverent selection of toys and games, from vintage mechanicals, Star Wars, GI Joe and Transformers to contemporary Japanese vinyl and plush toys” is a rare display of “The Making of” Joe Ledbetter’s Mr. Bunny. ToyCyte readers are no stranger to the iconic JLED rabbit–one of the most collected designer vinyl toys in recent years. Produced by Wheaty Wheat in 2005, Mr. Bunny now occasionally hops onto the aftermarket commanding a price of $500+ (before the economy went to hell, I thought I saw these going for $1K). But now, thanks to these great images from Ashley Standera, associate Curator of the museum, we can harken back to a more innocent time. The Cameron Art Museum is currently displaying the Mr. Bunny original paint master, Mr. Bunny original test shot, roto molds of the feet head, ears, body and tail and spray masks of the foot, head, ear, body and tail. I love being witness to the process of how things are made. If you are anywhere around Wilmington, you should go check this out. It’s pretty amazing for toys to be in museums, let alone the equipment that is used to make toys. The Toy Crazy exhibit runs through February 1st.

Yoskay Yamamoto’s Koibito Release Party at Munky King

Something fishy is about to go down at Munky King. But don’t worry: it won’t be a smelly affair. It’s a party to celebrate the official release of the very much anticipated Koibito figure by Yoskay Yamamoto.

Being released with be the Gold Koibito in a limited edition of 500, and a special Munky King Exclusive edition of 150, but it’s a secret surprise colorway. But these weren’t the first, a 7” black version was released at last summer’s San Diego Comic Con.

Koibito was based on one of Yamamoto’s paintings – “Once upon a time I had a goldfish named Tuna. But he passed away beause of my laziness and mistreatment…so I painted him for his memory…”

The release party happens on December 11^th from 7-11pm at the Munky King store and gallery on Melrose in LA. Yamamoto will be there live and in person and will be doing a signing, plus he’ll have some very special custom pieces with him. And if you’re smart, you’ll get their early: he’ll be giving a special surprise to a small amount of the first people in line to get their Kobito.

Frank Kozik Busts Into Christie’s Pop Culture Auction

There’s something exciting about seeing the full spectrum of Frank Kozik’s Ludwig Van and Ho Chi Minh busts all together. We wrote about all the colorways: some were exclusive to certain stores, others were part of a subscription service or for a convention and all were limited to just 50 pieces for $200 each. Now Christie’s Punk Rock and Pop Culture auction is making Kozik’s busts available as complete sets. For an estimate $3K-$4K, the highest bidder will take home a complete set of 13 Frank Kozik Ludwig Van 15-inch vinyl busts, including: pink, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, white, glow in the dark, silver, copper, bronze and black. Similarly, you can also do one-stop shopping for a collection of 12 Ho Chi Minh busts. For an estimated $3K-$4K, the highest bidder gets the pink, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, white, silver, olive, gold, purple and black busts accompanied by a hat and a cast resin machine gun.

The auction will be live in New York on Monday, November 24th. I asked Simeon Lipman, who heads up the Pop Culture Department at Christie’s, how exactly this works and what happened with the last auction. He said:

This is a live auction, meaning the pieces are sold sequentially, once bidding ends on one piece, it begins on the next. Bidders place their bids either live in the auction room, on the telephone or internet, or they can leave a bid. Those pieces in the last sale that did not sell, did not reach their reserves (the lowest price the seller will sell his or her piece for). The reserves are confidential, but by law they must be at or below the low estimate. Some of the pieces in the last sale were indeed bid upon, but because the bids did not hit the reserve, the pieces did not sell.

I also asked him what he thought of these Kozik busts, and he replied: “I really love the Kozik busts; together they look absolutely amazing.” I’m inclined to agree. If you’ve got the cash, put your paddle up for these guys.

Luke Chueh and Gallery1988 Present Vivisect Playset Round 5

Gallery1988 just announced its upcoming exhibition, a tradition at the venue: “The Vivisect Playset (Round 5).” For five years now, Luke Chueh and Gallery 1988 curated and hosted The Vivisect Playset, an art show featuring artists who regularly employed animal characters in their work to illustrate the human condition. The show has illuminated the talents of several artists, helped set the foundation and direction for Gallery1988, and even conceived a series of toys, produced by STRANGEco. Beverly Hills Chihuahua Has Nothing On Munktiki

Forget vinyl. Forget plastic. Forget plush. Join Munktiki as he takes figures to the realm of the old, the ancient, the honorable art of ceramics. Munktiki aka Miles Nielsen makes some fancy schmancy super fine Tiki Mugs that are done in an artisan limited edition series. Nielsen recently spent some time in Japan doing an artist residency there. His new work will be on display at San Francisco’s Super7 and will feature stunning new works that were “inspired by traditional Japanese Ceramics, and modern Japanese Monsters and Cartoon imagery.” The image above is the Mainchichi Chihuahuas that are 5 ½ inches tall and goes for $50. And it looks like Nielsen has some big love for these tiny dogs, he hopes to expand his chihuahua offerings and be able to “create special designer Chihuahua merchandise, create a rad Chihuahua community on the Forums, be totally non profit and donate to Chihuahua rescues.” Whether you dig tiny dogs or not, there will surely be oodles to ogle. The show opens on December 14^th with a reception at 7pm.

The More The Merrier at Super7

It’s pretty much a rule of thumb that “the more is the merrier.” Here is a good reason to celebrate abundance and the coming together of humanity: The More the Merrier show that opens December 6^th at Super7 in San Francisco. Super7 is throwing this as a holiday party and you, yes you are invited. There will be a “gaggle of the best up and coming SF Bay Area artists” with work on display plus refreshments and some hot sales on their in-stock items, just in time for X-mas. And this is one of those ‘cash and carry’ shows. So you give them your cash, you carry out your super rad art. Hello Chicago! Hello Miami! It’s a Merry Munny Party

Kidrobot is getting into the Christmas spirit early this year, even before Thanksgiving’s turkey orgy has come and gone. On November 20^th from 6-8pm there will be a Merry Munny Party at the Kidrobot stores in Miami and at the Pirate Store in Chicago.

Dreams Come True at the Japanese American National Museum

Here’s a really good excuse to go get some an injection of culture and make your way to a museum. On December 6^th at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles, there will be an opening reception for this star-studded custom vinyl show called Dreams to Dreams. The reception will be from 1-4 and the show will continue you to 2009 and end on January 4^th.

The format du jour for the forty-five plus artists to customize? Dacosta Bayley’s (aka Chocolate Soop) DCTO – Dreams Come True Object- vinyl toy. Jon Burgerman Toy Signing at Forbidden Planet

This Saturday, Jon Burgerman will return to Forbidden Planet for a toy signing. Last there for his Toy2R Egg Qee series, Jon will likely have on hand a couple cases of the Heroes of Burgertown. In addition, you should definitely pick up a copy of his Pens Are My Friends book, which contains wonderful pictures, captions and extra stuff too. He’ll also have on hand Posca pens, wallpaper and gift cards right in time for the holidays. (This combination of all three is perfect for people who want to giftwrap an actual house.) Where The Wild Art Is: Maurice Sendak Tribute Show

Maurice Sendak’s Where The Wild Things Are was one of my favorite books as a kid and still remains essential reading. A group of artists found themselves similarly affected and have created work inspired by Maurice Sendak for the Where The Wild Art Is exhibit. Attendees will be treated to 30 rare original drawings by Mr. Sendak. The pieces come from various projects that Sendak worked on including character studies from Where the Wild Things Are and Seven Little Monsters, as well as drawings used in the creation of murals painted in San Francisco’s Metreon Center (I was there!). You can also check out and purchase Wild Art interpretations by ToyCyte faves like David Flores, Luke “Skaffs” Feldman and Vanessa “Soreheads” Matthews. The show opens tomorrow, Thursday, November 13th at 7PM at the Wonderful World Art Gallery in Los Angeles.

Marka27’s Broken Bones Day of the Dead Minigod for VTN

Yeah, it may be a month late to celebrate but that’s not stopping Marka27 (the artist Victor Quinonez) to pay homage to Dia de Los Muertos–the Day of the Dead–that is traditionally celebrated November 1st. This figure, an exclusive for VTN, (Vinyl Toys Network), will debut December 6^th. The Broken Bones “Day of the Dead” MG2 is part of his popular Minigods series which follows the MG1 Brazil and the MG2 Mexico creations. He continues to beautifully and artfully pay tribute to his Hispanic heritage with his minigods that are inspired by ancient indigenous cultures.

This black and white vinyl piece will be made in an edition of just 150 pieces and will be available as at the Winter Vinyl Toy Network show in Pasadena. The show runs for two days and Marka will be signing on both Saturday and Sunday.

If you could get rich off anxiety, let’s just say I’d own a fleet of yachts with Chuck E. Cheese-style ballpits filled with Dunnys. Unfortunately, anxiety is no fast track to wealth, but perhaps, at least, a catalyst to creativity. As part of Jon Burgerman’s latest London solo show, Because I Can’t Sit Still, he created the Anxiety Wall–a sprawling installation of ink drawings wallpapering the entire back of the gallery. While the show ended at the start of this month, you can take home a piece of artistic neuroses by purchasing one of the drawings at Jon’s web shop here. These are original drawings, signed and chosen by Jon for £10 ($15 USD) each plus postage. Multiple orders will receive refunds on the postage saved, and they’re nearly all gone!

Here’s one for all our readers in the London area: James Jarvis is stepping out for a mini King Ken signing at Playlounge. The signing takes place Saturday, November 22nd from 4-6PM. Two things you can infer from the flyer: 1) There is going to be a mini King Ken series 2 and 2) James Jarvis will sign “other Amos products” that you might already own. I wonder if he will sign his signature bottles of Malibu rum (below)?
