When I wrote about Buff Monster’s series 2 figures here, I was kind of shocked at a pricetag of $29.99 for a mini-figure. But that’s nothing compared to what’s about to occur over the next two months. Way back in April, Sunny brought news of Phillips de Pury & Company to ToyCyte regarding their auction of several Japanese kaiju pieces. Well, PdP shows they’ve got their gavels on the pulse of the art toy world with their latest Urban Art Auction taking place in London on September 6th and New York on October 25th. A selection of original works in a variety of mediums by top urban street artists will include: Bansky, Bast, Beejoir, Blek le Rat, DFace, Faile, Shepard Fairey, Insect, Invader, KAWS, Dave Kinsey, Adam Neate, Nick Walker, Barry Mcgee, Micallef, Skullphone, Suckadelic and Swoon.
But the thing to talk about at the water cooler: Los Angeles-based Buff Monster will have his art auctioned for the first time as part of this event. If you needed convincing that low brow and high art have become synonymous, look no further than Buff’s squirting mammaries. I hope these sell for a lot.
UPDATE 8/15. Just got a picture of Buff’s piece in the auction. Check it out below. Buff will be introduced to a new audience in London with his spray-painting on flattened cans on wood, “Hard Pink,” which is estimated at 600-800 British Pounds ($1,119-$1,492 USD). Buff will have several more paintings at the second auction in New York in October. The complete online catalog will be available at phillipsdepury.com next Monday with the art toys starting at lot #59 and urban art lots beginning at #200.
