I should probably post a clipboard over my desk to keep track of all my findings that refute Supertouch’s recent proclamation that “the toy game is dead.” Believe me, I know from dead: Bela Lugosi, FM radio–the list goes on, but I wouldn’t include toys. Sure, I think we’re starting to see a bit of market saturation, but part of what’s happening is new names are joining the fray. Maybe that’s scary or upsetting to the old guard, but personally, I find it inspiring.
Case in point: Boids from brothers Liam and Ben who make up the UK outfit 2 Petal Rose. Imagine crossing cyborgs with sparrows, and you’ll get these pigeons with piping for wings. The Boids (droid birds) are currently in the prototype stage. The models shown here are made out of ABS plastic, but plans are for the final Boids to be hand-cast in resin. At about 3″ tall, Boids will mingle nicely with your mini-figure collection. All will have different beaks and some will have gasmasks (which I’m guessing gasmask-loving Andy from TRE will be happy about if he’s reading this…) It’s obviously too early to set a price on these guys, but quoth their website: “We’re not going to over charge you - this is what we love doing.”
Shown below is an blank gold Boid (courtesy of Liam) that gives you an all-angle glimpse into the aviary. (Do those gold heads conjure Hershey Kisses for anybody or am I just feeling peckish?) This may be the first production toy from 2 Petal Rose, but it’s not the first platform customization or original figure. Check out their website, MySpace, and this thread on the KR forums for more info. Warmongering Munnys, a Mecha Munny and a custom-built Bot from 2petalrose after the jump!
