So did you see the McCain commercial comparing Barack Obama to Paris Hilton and Britney Spears? What kind of a backwards campaign manager does he have where people think Obama would make a bad president because he’s internationally liked? Never one to ignore a chance to assume the spotlight, Paris took a turn with a response video. (There’s a joke about “off-shore drilling” in here somewhere…) But really the best commentary on this issue came from Paula Poundstone last Saturday on NPR’s Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me. Apparently, Ma and Pa Hilton didn’t care for the portrayal of their daughter in the McCain ad and decided to stop funding the campaign. To which Poundstone quipped, If the Hiltons stopped funding everything that cast disdain upon their daughter, perhaps that’s why we’re in a recession…
Which brings me to the concept of celebrity. Does it even really exist anymore in this age where anyone can be a reality TV “star” and our names and pictures are splattered across the Internet by way of all our social networks? Of course McCain wouldn’t be pondering this stuff because he’s about as hip as a hip replacement.
So um, yeah, toys. I was in downtown San Francisco the other day and I stopped into Karikter, where what did I see but a legion of Jailbreak Toys‘ Barack Obama action figures among all the Little Princes and Tin Tins. This was my first opportunity to see one in person. When I got home, I checked Jailbreak’s website and found that not only can you still order the Barack Obama Action Figure standard edition there for just $12.99 here, but they’ve also got 200 of the SDCC 08 sold-out Summer Suit exclusives for $19.99 each here too.
There’s other cool Obama gear at the site. They’ve got a pair of t-shirts designed in my birth town of Brooklyn and printed in my current HQ of Berkeley on American Apparel shirts. The first tee features original artwork by renowned comic book artist, Nelson X Ascencio with front and back designs on white or asphalt. The second tee evokes old school Air Jordans with this 2008 remix of a classic icon. It’s all right there in black and white. (Or white and black). The shirts are $19.99 each with $1 per shirt donated to the Obama campaign.
