Barack Obama as a Hip-Hop Jedi Hero by Suckadelic

action figures, custom, designers, events

It’s the hour of the Sucklord on ToyCyte right now. Following Sunny’s Group Suck-Off Show post, here comes a preview of Obama getting the Suckadelic treatment. (Taken out of context, that sentence probably lands me on some CIA watchlist.) Morgan Phillips (aka The Sucklord) hacked into his Sucklord 600 figure, keeping the boom box and light saber to present Obama as “youthful (hip-hop) and heroic (jedi).” “I wanted to do something relevant, and at the same time, keep it stylistically Suckadelic,” he says. “I put a backdrop behind him so I would have a place to put the slogan Brand New Funky President (from the James Brown song). I thought a coin was a very presidential setting for a candidate this historic, and I chose the penny to play up his connection to both the common person and Abe Lincoln.” Definitely a piece for history, and one that should appeal to collectors of Star Wars, presidential memorabilia and hip-hop’s crown jewels alike…

Check out the current lineup of Art + Action = Obama 08 [blogged] here. The show goes off at Toy Tokyo’s The Showroom on October 17th. Keep it tuned to ToyCyte for exclusives, sneak previews, available work and coverage of the event.
