Beyond Toys, designers

Lately, every time I come across an environmentally friendly, earth-conscious designer t-shirt, it’s from the UK. What gives US? We’re finally saying “no thanks” to paper or plastic and bringing our own tote bags. Hybrids are officially hipper than Hummers*. BK has replaced its overtly obnoxious TV commercial for chicken fries with an only slightly obnoxious commercial for apple fries. America: We’re ready to change our t-shirts. (And not just because it’s really hot in my house and I sweat easily.)

Enough about me. Tokyo Toystore is launching a brand new range of T-shirts tomorrow, Thursday, July 31st. The high quality tees are printed by them using the latest digital garment printers and made from 70% naturally sustainable bamboo (very comfortable) and 30% organic cotton. The kick-off features shirts by two UK designers, Doktor A and Jon Burgerman, and two US designers, Dalek and Tara McPherson. Each shirt is limited to a run of 100, except for the inimitable Jon Burgerman, who has a run of just 60 available. The shirts will be for sale in male and female sizes for £18.95 here, among other cool tees by Kozik, MAD and The London Police.

My only gripe is that the shirts are white, but they win me over by spelling “fiber” as “fibre” below. Here’s some more info on the range direct from the website, followed by a few ToyCyte-exclusive previews:

Fabric woven from bamboo yarn is light, almost translucent, and softer than cotton. It has a natural quality that feels like silk, but has the advantage of being machine-washable. This natural fibre is hypoallergenic, absorbent, and fast drying. It is naturally anti-bacterial and will not hold odour. Like other natural fibres, it allows the body to breathe as the fabric absorbs the perspiration away from the body. This fabric is cooling in summer, warm in winter, and environmentally friendly all year round.

* OK, so this largely depends on location still…
