My most unrepentantly geeky toy excitement is all directed towards the current DC Universe Classics line coming out of Mattel. While the fourth set of these hasn’t even been fully distributed (with frustrated, frothy collectors claiming that none of the figures have been evenly distributed anywhere), Mattel announced their eighth wave of DCUC figures, due out in Spring of 2009.
The line is scheduled to include Hawkgirl, obscure bodiless villain Gentleman Ghost, Commander Steel, Vigilante, Mr. Terrific, two different Doctor Fate figures (with a rare version in gold), and best of all, two different Parademons that look like they’ve fallen from the pages of a classic, freaked-out Jack Kirby comic. Collect all seven basic figures and you can construct a 10″ tall Giganta figure, complete with leopard print miniskirt. For a superevolved ape with the ability to alter her size and mass at will, I don’t think you’d kick her out of bed. You sick monkey-lover.
I tend to look at the best of these as a tribute to the influential art of Jack Kirby, whose comics played a huge role in the formation of the pop surrealist genre. These Parademons will join a Kirby-based Big Bertha, Orion, Lightray and Kalibak, which has just as much significance as your Olivas display, so have a look!
