I think it’s cool when toys cross over, and this is exactly the case with Art by Davey’s Amanda LePore CelebriDuck. By broad definition, it’s a designer toy. It’s also a rubber duck based on the image of a NYC icon, and the fashion world (from Lady Bunny to Patricia Field), as opposed to the toy scene, was the first to call it “fierce.” I had to do a bit of research to understand the toy that was, at the David LaChapelle art opening, referred to as “the next big thing!” Far as I can tell, Art by Davey delves in photography, fashion and costume design with an emphasis on eclectic and ethnic. Amanda LePore may need no introduction on the nightclub circuit, but toy fans may need to know that her “Time Tranny” Swatch watch is the fastest selling limited edition Swatch to date.
The 4″x4″ ducks were sculpted by Christopher Howes in a limited run. You can get one signed on Amanda’s site as well as chic boutiques in fashion-forward cities like New York. Art by Davey blogs that this is merely the first in a line of new CelibriDuck creations. Other pop, fashion and historical icons are in the works. It’s good to have a broad spectrum of characters represented in the toy world. With the departure of Isis on ANTM, one wonders if ratings will drop?
