Beyond Toys

I’m not exaggerating when I say that the Dinglife website has 9 pages and 102 items on which you can slap a skin designed by Alex Pardee. Perhaps what’s even more impressive is that Pardee represents as the lone visual artist doing Dings while the rest of the art elite makes their mark on a Gelaskin or a Skinizi. You can put an image from Alex Pardee’s The Patient Series on your phones, iPods, laptops and gaming devices. Or as Alex puts it: “make all those other fuckers jealous when you are wailing on Guitar Hero using a Guitar with a giant naked Hand-Man vomiting a yellow Beast from HELLLLLL.”

Is there a market for all these skins, I wonder? Like Peapod and Webvan of the early 2000s dot com boom (and subsequent crash) when you could have anything delivered to your house, we’ll see if consumers have the money (and desire) to cover their stuff in the long run. Now if someone could just design a skin for my sofa; my cat kind of destroyed it. Alex’s Dings (no couch covers though) can be found here. And if you’re in the L.A. area, check out his Scratch & Abrasians art show opening July 12th at SURU.
