San Diego Comic-Con Exclusives Part 4 »

San Diego Comic-Con Exclusives Part 4

Every year, fanboys and fangirls of varying stripes descend on San Diego for Comic-Con. Although the event has extensive programming, there’s one activity that unites the collectors with the cosplayers, the MMP gamers with the manga readers, the superheroes with the steampunks: the pursuit of SDCC’s exclusive toys.

San Diego Comic-Con Exclusives Part 4ToyCyte will be publishing a weekly bulletin of SDCC exclusives. This might be my favorite of the bunch so far. I mean, look at the banner. You’ve got Barack Obama surrounded by his Yeti, Kaiju, Alien and ChiBo constituents. (Note proximity of the ChiBo crown…) Here’s the Top 5 for Week 4. If you’re in America, Happy Fourth of July.

Itokin Park’s Super7 Exclusive Himalayan. Super7 has several SDCC ‘08 exclusives (including Squirm, Stomp, Beetlar and Mummy Boy), but it’s this 5.7-inch Himalayan from Itokin Park that I’m picking for the weekly roundup. The figure is clear orange vinyl with yellow, blue, red and black sprays. Pick yours up for $100 at Booth #4729.

San Diego Comic-Con Exclusives Part 4Chi-Kit Kwong’s ChiBo Series. Choosing between brothers is especially difficult when both Michael Kwong (Galaxy Bunch/Alphamaniacs) and Chi-Kit Kwong (ChiBo) have great new figures making their US debuts at SDCC ‘08. Michael has sounded so proud of his younger bro’s series on his Flickr page, that I figure these guys have no rivalry. ChiBo is Chi-Kit’s first series of 60 characters. Five characters: Action Kwong (modeled on Chi-Kit himself), Tall Kitty, Space Funky, His Royal Highness, and Teenage Track Star will be available at the convention. Each figure stands between 5 and 7 inches and comes with a different mini-comic.

San Diego Comic-Con Exclusives Part 4JailBreak Toys‘ Barack Obama action figure. Rumor around town is that Barack Obama himself will be attending SDCC ‘08. The possibility of getting this action figure signed makes the $12.99 pricetag for the standard version (now that’s change we can afford) an even better deal. The 6-inch figure has 8 points of articulation and comes in a window box. If you’re setting your sights on something a tad more exclusive, head over to ToyTokyo (Booth #5237) where you can pick up the Barack Obama action figure in a “white summer suit,” which is limited to just 200 pieces.

San Diego Comic-Con Exclusives Part 4Daniel Johnston’s Jeremiah the Innocent (pink variant). Musician, artist and cult icon Daniel Johnston took his Jeremiah the Innocent character 3D with sculpting by Dave Pressler and production by New York’s At Arms. Previously, the figure was available in three colorways: white (edition of 350), green (edition of 250), and yellow (edition of 250) for $99. The 12-inch figure is back for SDCC ‘08 in an exclusive San Diego Comic-Con Exclusives Part 4pink colorway (image is my mock-up only). Price and edition number TBA. Get yours at ToyTokyo (Booth #5237).

Gama-Go x Toy2r’s Yeti Qee. Both Gama-Go and Diamond Select (Booth #2607) will have exclusive preview samples of the 2.5-inch Yeti Qee available at SDCC ‘08. According to Gama-Go’s blog, there’s a 75% chance, they’ll have the real deal for sale too. If not, the Qees will be available in August. There’s also a 9-inch vinyl Yeti with a light-up log torch in the works from Gama-Go for later this year. Maybe they’ll have a sneak-peak?

PQ Kewpie Dolls Recall Kaws, Creep You Out

This is some really wack bring-out-the-gimp Yo Gabba Gabba on crack kind of shit. I saw these PQ Kewpie Dolls on the Triclops Blog yesterday, but had to save it for closing time Friday because if something was ever NSFW, it’s certainly this. The twisted minds at Japan’s Build Up have quite royally debased the puritanity of the kewpie doll. Not that there wasn’t always something that creeped me out about kewpies, but well, this is different. At first I wondered if maybe I just thought this was bizarre because I don’t speak/read Japanese, but then there’s the dude getting a kewpie doll up the bum and it’s like, oh, well OK, some messages really do transcend the language barrier.

PQ Kewpie Dolls Recall Kaws, Creep You OutPQ Kewpie Dolls Recall Kaws, Creep You Out

I’m sure it’s just coincidence, but don’t the last three recall a Kaws Dissected Companion, Warm Regards print and Bendy, respectively? The bottom row of Kewpies (Buff Q, Gross Q, Crap Q and Nyoro Q) are the newest in the series of cell-phone straps ($6.29 USD here), while the top row (Fat Q, Grandpa Q, Skinny Q and Melting Q) are the originals.

PQ Kewpie Dolls Recall Kaws, Creep You OutBuild Up has produced short videos for 7 out of 8 of the Kewpies so far. I’d venture to say that the only vid safe in mixed company is Buff Q, which is just kind of a kaleidoscopic rendering of a Kewpie on ‘roids to techno. Gross Q incorporates a gun, box cutter, naked puppetry and exploding guts into a vignette that does make me wish I had a clue on the language tip. Fat Q gets cooked in a bowl of ramen. I have absolutely no idea what is happening in the Nyoro vid, but it involves possibly ear cleaning and romance gone awry. Skinny Q is a diet pill commercial that may in fact be endorsed by the Olsen twins. M. Night Shyamalan watched Grandpa Q and said to himself, “Damn, I wish I’d thought of this first.” And well, Crap Q, you’re just going to have to check that one out yourself. Zed’s dead baby…

PQ Kewpies can be procured at Strapya-World, the kind folks who make it possible for you to view these videos after the jump…Enjoy!

Barack Obama: An Action Figure We Can Believe In

Sure, I’d like to think that my little “Playing With Politics” series [tagged] and Obama poster coverage [tagged] has gotten some toy fans thinking about the importance of the upcoming presidential election. But try as I might, nothing penetrates the hearts and minds of toy collecting voters quite like an action figure of presidential candidate, Barack Obama.

Barack Obama: An Action Figure We Can Believe InBarack Obama: An Action Figure We Can Believe InBarack Obama: An Action Figure We Can Believe In

JailBreak Toys has created the first Barack Obama action figure toy. The 6-inch future president comes in a display box with original artwork and the power to transform a nation. You can pre-order the Obama action figure for just $11.99 from Imagine Gate. For every online order, they will donate one dollar to the Obama campaign. Figures are expected to ship around July 15th.

In an added exciting bonus, JailBreak Toys has teamed up with ToyTokyo for an SDCC exclusive Barack Obama action figure. “Barack Obama action figure in white suit” is the first item listed on ToyTokyo’s SDCC 2008 debuts flier. Visit them at Booth #5237 to pick up one in an edition of 200 pieces in this special summer colorway. Rumors are rampant that Obama (and Michelle in cosplay as Wonder Woman–OK I just started that rumor, but feel free to spread it) will be attending the convention. Imagine being able to get your action figure signed by the man himself? Kind of beats the pants off your lonely uncle’s collection of presidential autographs on paper. Happy Fourth of July, folks! Subatomic Particle Plush Toys

Subatomic Particle Plush ToysIt’s already been certified acceptable by the NY Times to give your son an Uglydoll (Great article, by the way. It quotes Gary Cross, a professor of modern history at Penn State as saying: “Boys need figures to play with. You see that going back to the Egyptians.” So fellas, if you need to get a $300 Bertie by your girl, make sure you remind her that it’s an innate need dating back to the pyramids. You’re welcome. Anyway…)

So now that it’s officially OK to give a boy a doll, Pandora’s (Plushie) Box is wide open to possibilities. For instance, can you give a physicist a doll? You bet! At least if said stuffed animal is a member of The Particle Zoo, a project conceptualized, designed and sewn by one Julie Peasley.

Subatomic Particle Plush ToysI’m not sure you can get more delightfully geeked out than this. Here’s an excerpt discussing the heft of the dolls:

Particle weights vary according to their properties. The Higgs boson, top quark and W boson, for example, are the heaviest–they’re stuffed with polished gravel. The massless bosons are the lightest—they are stuffed with polyfill. The muon, a middleweight (very loosely speaking), is stuffed with poly beads. I tried to make the tachyon completely massless but I’m still waiting for him to return from the past (future?) to find out if it worked.

The Particle Zoo is available as 22 individual particles and 11antiparticles with stories for $9.75 each (+ shipping). If you need to get a bunch (or, alternatively have no idea what any of this stuff means), opt for a pack: You can get the entire set of 33 for $313 or 6-packs for $55.50. The newest members of the crew are the “anatomically redesigned” Proton and Neutron. Even if you only know of CERN from The DaVinci Code, check out The Particle Zoo.

Artoyz Elements Blind Boxes with Burgerman, Jurevicius, KOA and MIST

Awesome French webzine, Guillotine, made it to Barcelona for the Bread and Butter exhibition. They’re bringing us some great pics to supplement the coverage that Artoyz provided yesterday of their upcoming figures Kid Onion and Crazy Monkey.  Easy Hey’s Kid Onion figure has 4 multi-hued colorways, while Bunka’s Crazy Monkey is shown in pink, blue, black, olive green, mono and white (DIY?). But perhaps the most exciting revelation of all is the appearance of an artist series of the premiere Artoyz Elements figures. Guillotine reports that these will drop as part of a blind-boxed series and include figures by Jon Burgerman (UK), Nathan Jurevicius (Australia), KOA (France) and MIST (France). Check ‘em out above and below. I need those Burgermans to go with my Burgermenos egg Qees!

The first of the 5 billboards for Ray-Ban x Project Colorize went live in NYC with the unveiling of Ron English’s piece. The launch included the presence of actors dressed in black wearing the signature sunglasses in the middle of Manhattan. The public art show literally stopped traffic, which echoes Ron English’s philosophy in the video below that “If you want to get hit by a car, go stand in the street.” Ron’s billboard blends the fashion trends of modernism and organic plant life to create a “fashion from another planet” look.  The video also includes brief interviews with Tara McPherson (”What could be better than girls flying bunnies?”) and Toofly. Check out a photo gallery of the launch here. [Via Slam X Hype]

One Up Hedora Shirts »

One Up Hedora ShirtsOne Up Hedora Shirts

Did you miss out on the recent Max Toy Co Hedorah? Fear not, because One Up has you covered (literally) with this sweet 2-sided Hedorah t-shirt available for pre-order here. The shirts come in black (S,M,L,XL) and white (M,L) for 3,150 Yen ($30 USD) and are expected sometime this month. Notably, the shirt bears the copyright year of the classic Godzilla vs. Hedorah film. Hedorah (also known as hedora or The Smog Monster) was named for hedoro, the Japanese word for sludge, vomit, slime or chemical ooze. Since Hedorah feeds on pollution, it’s curious (yet comical) that he’s telling you to “Cleanup your room.” Maybe he’s sort of making a first-person statement. “Cleanup your room” like “Hulk smash.” Cool shirt, good price.

Pink Futura x Adfunture piece coming July 18th

Pretty in Pink. Yeah, I’m a girl so I’m fond of the pink and it looks like Adfunture is too! They’ll be making a hot pink Futura x Adfunture signature/tag piece (the previous incarnation of the piece was in a drab gray). It’ll be available only on their webstore on July 18th. Eddi the founder of AdFunture says of the piece and the banner ad above “Some of you would have noticed the banner on this page. Some cant make out what it is, some of you did. Well, it is. We did NYCC, so we won’t be at SDCC this year. However, never count us out of the action. This one is nice, among others. But this one, exclusively for this webstore, is super limited. Don’t blink. Don’t blame me for not informing you earlier. This is as early as I could.”

Spidey and Daredevil Get Bronze Bath »

Spidey and Daredevil Get Bronze BathSpidey and Daredevil Get Bronze Bath

Sideshow Collectibles and Bowen designs have been doing some cool stuff with the faux-bronze paint scheme. Their Captain America, Wolverine, and Dr. Doom were pretty damn rad. This time around they’re releasing Odin, his boy Thor, Spidey, and Daredevil with the same bronze look. The Spidey and Daredevil look great. Spidey has a very classic look that goes great with the bronze effect, and the details on Daredevil really set him apart. As for Thor? He’s always been a chump, so even though he looks amazing, he’s forever remembersed as the guy that spoke bad Olde English. And Odin’s his dad, so we have him to blame for Thor. The Odin figure is actually the most detailed, and has amazing knot-work design on the armor, and incredible sculpting on the face and beard, and he even has his raven Huginn (or is it Muginn?) perched on his shoulder. Anyways, they go on sale next week, and people on Sideshow Collectibles priority list will get first dibs on Friday the 11th at 10am. Not a priority member? Click here for the details.

Gargamel Preps for SDCC With Exclusives »

Gargamel expert customizer and all around work horse, Koji Harmon, is prepping his new set of Tokoji Seijin for SDCC. If you remember his work with the Super7 Tokoji or with his last round of Kustom Koi, then I’m sure you’re just as excited as me to see the final product. The new figures are going to be in a glossy green soft vinyl (according to his blog). I got word from Koji that the inspiration for this next exclusive will be the Japanese river sprite, the Kappa, and may feature a yellow paint scheme to highlight the green (perhaps something like this). Kappa are mischievous, and sometimes dangerous, creatures found in the waters of Japan. Koji’s Kappa will be available at the Gargamel booth (number 4739) in San Diego in extremely limited quantities, so get there early and expect them to run out!

David says to expect something similar to the booth at NYCC ‘08 (see photos here). As I reported previously here, there is going to be an SDCC exclusive plush. It will sell for $30 in an edition of 400. Any remainders will go to the webstore or shops attending SDCC. The other exclusives are:

  • Haunted Babo Kaiju (50 pcs made but 40 pcs for sale)

  • Solid Orange Wage Kaiju (100 pcs made, 85 for sale)

David also mentions that Giant Robot will have some original sketches for sale from an upcoming publishing project over at their booth. Due to a medical treatment coinciding with the convention, David and Sun-Min will be unable to attend, but may show up via iChat if possible. Feel better, Sun-Min!

This story just keeps getting sweeter. Grass Hut has made available the entire collection of paintings and drawings by Tim and Tigerlily Biskup for their TnT show. At the tender age of 5, the show marks Tigerlily’s gallery debut. Says Tim: “We’ve been drawing and painting together since [Tigerlily] was able to hold a crayon. We’ve always been inspired by each other’s art, so the idea of doing a show together was inevitable.”Aww… There are over 40 original works by Tim solo, Tigerlily solo and Tim and Tiger in collaboration. Each piece is smaller than an index card and ranges from $25 to $600, signed. Most of the art is still available for sale here.

Buckeye Rot: Red Version Buckeye Rot: Red Version

Is all the talk about salmonella making you freak out about tomatoes? I admit that I’m a bit more careful about consuming salsa these days. I think it’s ironic that Sket One recently announced the new version of his Buckeye Rot. Is it coincidence or just perfect timing? Either way the Buckeye Rot will soon be available in red, and Sideshow Collectibles is currently accepting pre-orders here. The Buckeye Rot: Red is limited to 804 pieces and costs $79.99.

I saw the yellow Buckeye Rot at VTN ‘08, and I thought it looked great. The yellow version came packaged in a mesh onion sack. I thought the packaging was clever but it didn’t look as good as the crate. This time around, the Buckeye Rot comes in the specially designed wooden crate. It’s a nice bonus to a well-designed piece. If you’re looking for Buckeye Rot: Yellow, you can still buy it at 3DRetro.

…and this is my last post for the week. Hope you have a safe and fun 4th of July weekend!
